Hello,

Sorry for creating multiple threads.

I'm an AdWords noob and have $x,xxx in my AdWords account (it was a business expense awhile back).

I was affected by the Penguin update with a 40% reduction in traffic, even though I've been running and building a quality, white hat site for more than 10 years.

I've never relied on AdWords before, and as much as I don't want to use it, I'm going to try it based on the circumstances.

Here's my plan:

I want to do a 1-day test with $1,000. The keyword that I am targeting is very popular, with high competition.

For the AW veterans, should I be going for:

A) A higher ad position with less clicks
- Position 1-2
- Max CPC $10
~275 clicks per day

B) A lower ad position with more clicks

- Position 5-6
- Max CPC $1.5
~ 990 click per day

Any help is appreciated, as I don't want to blow through that much cash without seeing a return.

Thanks!

PPC and any traffic you have to pay for comes down to collecting data and optimizing from there. It's hard to say which option without seeing data from either one. I'm no PPC guru but this is how I understand it. Would love to hear other people's thoughts . What's interesting is why you think the lower ad position will get more clicks. Maybe I'm missin something

If I understood correctly, he means that he has a budget of $1k, so he'll be able to pay for either ~275 clicks on 1st position, or ~900 on 5th

Your figures seem off. Are they both for the same keyword?

Have you figured out what CPA you need to be profitable/break even/meet your objective? From there you can work backwards with the est cpc to determine what conversion ratio you are looking for.

It's not clicks that are important but clicks that convert for the lowest cost.

Sounds like you are going on a broad match $1k spunk so for the love of god make sure you have a negative keyword list, and don't expect a return on day 1. Consider any money spent is money spent on data acquisition.

Ah thanks for pointing that out SC . Makes perfect sense now

Thanks for the responses.

If I am already ranked #4 for a keyword organically, will Google penalize my organic search results for that keyword if I advertise for it in the paid search?

I am hoping you are going to measure conversions.., and hopefully ROI..

Why not do 50/50 and decide yourself after seeing the result, whatever you are tracking...?
