I was wondering.. do you guys work from home or did you go out and get an office?

I had worked at home for almost exactly 1 year, and I was starting to feel like I'd hit a ceiling.

So, I went and got some office space, and now I feel like I'm running a company instead of a hustle. (even tho it's only been a week)

My ideas have expanded, and I'm looking at staffing up next. To me, it seems like my boundaries just disappeared.

Has anyone else felt like your potential was stunted working from your house?

I am working from a home office right now. But am gonna get me a office the day I am out of college -- 6-8 months more. =D

If I want to work in an "office" and be around "staff" I'll go get a job. If you set up a space in your home to get your work done, exercise some restraint (from watching TV and all the other distractions), create boundaries for your family members (if you have any) and get busy, you can be much more productive at home. There's no time wasted on commutes, no time wasted waiting for some slow-a$$ waitress to bring your lunch, no time wasted by people dropping into your office to "chat," and no time wasted having to be somewhere at a certain time. When you are at home you have much more freedom and control over your time, and time is money. Plus there's no dimwitted boss telling you what to do. But to each his own.

And if you are in the USA the tax differences can be large. Nothing like getting to write of some of the house you need to live in.

I cant remember the rules exactly but if you have a den or bedroom that is office only I think you can write off that space. Plus part of your car if you log the miles carefully. Maybe internet access, phone lines, office equipment....

Dont ask me, I left the USA years ago.

Sitting at home and no plans to get another office. Where I live too you can write off all kinds of stuff on your taxes ;)

The house, car mileage, even those important dinner dates....*ahem* I mean, "business meetings" I have with my wife...*ahem* I mean business clients. ;)

And not to mention sales tax write-offs. Computer hardware, broadband bill, server leases, etc.

I'd get an office, but only for staff.

I would still work at home and have an manager take care of the kiddies...er...employees and deal with all the office political bullshit. I've been through the corporate world and hated every minute of it so I have no interest in being couped up in an office all day. I'd rather spend that days doing other things and work a bit at night.

But for now I'm happy as a one man band. Plus it would be odd at first for employees to see me walk in in my underoos everyday. (standard work attire here)

I think eventually I would like to have a small office but only if I was large enough to hire some people. I would not be there that often and would still work out of the house mostly, as I love staying home and being able to do whatever I want whenever I want, most of the time. Being at home certainly doesn't hold you down, but can distract you at times, especially with kids running around.

I work at home and also out of home i.e at office.
I dont visit office quite often though because my manager runs it and i oversee it from home

I have an office.. it does help me avoid a couple nasty habits I had working at home:

1) wanking off rather than working
2) eating rather than working
3) wanking off while eating rather than working..

And it allows you to seperate work time from not work time and lets you leave your work at the office..

That's why I made the investment. I feel busier now too. Less time spent checking for sales being made and more time doing new projects.

Since you're at an office doing 1-3 is considered official business therefore it's not a bad habit?

:p

Home office for me but I with lerchmo and might eventually make a move towards that direction.

right now my office is setup in a spare bedroom, it's something like 14x12 so it's not a bad size but whenever I build my house I'm going to have a seperate "wing" built to use as an office.

I worked from home for a couple years, but honestly, at the end of the day, I just didn't want to be at my house any more... it was like I couldn't get away from work etc. Plus there is a few people who work for me and the daily mess was really getting on my nerves.

So we got an office thats about 5 minutes from my house, setup a huge white board with the 'to-dos' on it, graphs on the wall with daily/weekly/monthly earnings and now we have a great space for further expansion.

That's basically what I just did. Until Tomorrow OfficeMax is selling 6'x4' whiteboards for $49.95 (usually $169)

It's like I just got a powerboost for my business.
