Another Digital Camera Question

Alright.

I am looking to move to a digital SLR, however, I am an amateur and definitely not looking to move into the pro area (it's a hobby).

So, for the budget I am looking for, there are 3 cameras being offered:

- Sony Alpha 230
- Nikon D3000
- Canon 1000D

For all my review, the Nikon and Canon come out almost even. The nikon has the old nikon digital problem, that is the pictures turn out a bit cold in temperature. The canon seems a bit too warm from the samples I have seen and might be a tad blurrier.

I am tempted by the Alpha simply because I got my hands on another sony alpha and it took very nice shots with almost no effort.
It has no review on DPreview, so I looked through some samples on flickr and they seem to be very nice.

Any advice / opinions?

Spend an extra $100, get a D5000. It has a lot more options (I have this one)

This is like 10 years old [citation needed]. Get the XTi, the newest model.

Owning a D-SLR is awesome, except lens are expensive as shit.
 
The problem here is that prices are fucked up in Europe.

Seriously, I have no idea HOW they calculate them, but they differ so much from American prices (sometimes cheaper, often not) that your advice based on price is basically useless.

The 1000D is not old, it's like a little over a year old. I really like mine. It's not too big and the picture quality is excellent, without the settings being overwhelmingly complex. Do not get the kit lens, though. Like someone said in a related thread, spend the money on the glass.
 
I got a Canon Digital Rebel (EOS 450D). It is Super Awesome. Go for it.
 
I'd go for the Canon, but get the 500D over the 1000D if you can spring for the extra hundred euros or so difference.

Newer, better, smarter, faster, more resolution, probably a better kit lens, etc. etc. etc.
 
^ Was going to say pretty much the same. I have the 3000, and an older rebel with double battery holder/lenses/etc. They both even out and allow you some pretty amazing flexibility once you figure out manual settings/lighting and start messing around with lenses.

If I HAD to choose between the two, I think I'd still go with the Rebel, but only by a pubic hair.

Argh.. That's what I mean with pricing options here.

The 500D is 300$ more here, not 100.

Also (not directed at anyone or rather, everyone).. why do people have trouble with reading comprehension?

I specifically asked for opinions on 3 cameras... now I get opinions on 10, all different from those I asked about.

OK, one, you don't have to buy the camera right where you are located (where is that anyway?). There are MANY options for procuring camera equipment.

What is the price of each of these models locally in your local currency?

Two, yeah, you asked about those three models, but if there is a smarter choice then people are going to tell you so.
 
Emp, the only advice I can give you is to get down to a decent camera shop and try them out and see which one you like best. There's scarcely any difference between Nikon and Canon on a model-by-model basis, so see how they feel in your hand, menu interface etc. See which you prefer.

As I'm sure you're aware, once you commit you're pretty much locked in once you start buying lenses, so take the time to research thoroughly.
 
the A230 is basically the A200 with different menu and button layout and a better kit lens. However the A230 is smaller and it feels like a lady camera. If you have a big hand you might have problem handling it.

I love my A200 and it is all i needed. I rather save the money for more lens than spending it on a more expensive camera

I am in Switzerland, so for ease of use, we will just assume $ = CHF
(almost true)

Canon EOS 100D - 488$
Nikon D3000 - 549$
Sony Alpha 230 - 599$
Canon EOS 450D - 653$

All of these come with a Kit lense, which I realise is not that great, but price difference to onloy body is negligible over here. (for whatever reason)

Get a Nikon and like nick said sony sucks man that is peasant shit. It's either Nikon or Cannon.

Real talk though it's all in the lens too. Doesn't matter if you have a Nikon or Cannon if you don't have good lens your pictures are going to look like shit regardless. You can't take a picture of an ant with a 70-200mm and shit. So Lens+Technique

while it doesn't hurt to have it, using a DSLR to shoot video is just painful. I rather use my cellphone or flip

Carl Zeiss makes the second best lens (behind leica). And Sony is the only one who can use a AF zeiss lens...
