Here's the question..

If the price of an apple was raised 50% and then decreased 50%, making it cost $0.75, how much was the original price?

Choose an answer from the poll above. Let's see who is smart, and who just picks what everyone else chooses..

So far the majority of the users on the forum now are looking at this thread and the boob one.. Funny how intimidating a simple problem like this could be..

this problem seems really simple to me. and whenever the problem seems this simple to me, I am usually wrong.

You're the 75 cents one aren't you?

The price of an apple (x) is raised 50% shown as:

x + .5x

Then decreased 50%, so half of the previous formula:

.5(x + .5x)

All that equals $0.75

.5(x + .5x) = .75
.5x + .25x = .75
.75x = .75
x = 1

It's $1 and yes I read it and clicked .75 in 5 seconds :eek7:

After thinking about it for 1 minute it's very simple.

.75 is 50% of what? $1.50
$1.00 + 50% (.50) is $1.50

I never thought numbers and letters belonged together, but there is purpose in it! Jerxs-thanks for showing your "work", I'm very bad at math, so it would've hurt my head to figure it out. I'm very visual, so seeing the work helped!

I don't get it.. why would it be $0.75 to start with?

Originally I thought it was .75 because it was raised 50% and then decreased 50%. So if it starts out at .75, then you raise it 50% and then decrease it by 50% that brings it back down to .75. I honestly didn't know until the jerxs posted the formula. I HATE math. lol

Here's one:

The acceleration of a particle is directly proportional to the time t. At t = 0, the velocity of the particle is 400mm/s. Knowing that v = 370mm/s and x = 500mm when t = 1s, determine the velocity (v), the position (x), and the total distance traveled when t = 7s.

Good luck.
