Istanbul, Turkey
Around these times next year I'll be finishing up my Masters in political sciences and public administration. Given the circumstances of my country I have been on the look for an opportunity to get out of here and actually make use of myself and what i have. I just read something a few moments ago stating that Canada decided to open up their FSW program. I was thinking about applying.

However i don't how i would get a job there let alone which region i will be living in. But i do know that pushing a pencil here for mediocre pay isn't what I'd like.

Any Canadians want to chime in?

Getting a political sciences degree in Vancouver, Canada is the equivalent of being a gay or a woman. With no real job prospects.

Might be different elsewhere - I just speak for Vancouver and the 20-30 people I know that are completely fucked now.

You're from Turkey? Go to Toronto. If you were from Asia, I'd say goto Vancouver, but you're from Turkey, so go to Toronto. Trust me.

Once there, search out "Little Istanbul" or wherever all the Turks hang out (trust me, Toronto has a Turkish only community somewhere). Hang out there, speak some Turkish with people around at the restaurants / bars / coffee shops, search out the expat / community center & groups, and it won't be long before you find some people willing to help you get settled.

Whatever you need, they'll probably help with -- residence, SIN#, bank account, driver's license, low paying job, etc. Toronto has a really strong immigrant population, and different nationalities tend to stick with each other.

I do have a Turkish Passport but I've only been here for 6 years. I grew up New Jersey, and a the part of wanting to migrate to Canada is to get away from the Classic Turkish people. I mean they are all nice and dandy but It's not exactly a walk in the park for someone who was raised in the west. I have a close friend from college living in Saskatoon,Saskatchewan she was part Canadian, part Turkish so I'm guessing I'll be sticking close to her? I mean i thought about Montreal and read a bit about how most people speak french and my french is rather rusty.

So i should just apply for a tourist visa first get acquainted then come back here and apply?

Also my BA is in American Culture And Literature, so i also have that to fall back on.

Ohhh, so you're already North American and know your way around the culture, etc.? In that case, don't worry about Toronto so much, and live wherever you want. If you were a "just off the boat" immigrant, then I'd definitely recommend Toronto, as you'd finds support from fellow Turks there.

No idea why the hell you'd think Saskatoon is a good place to move to, but hey, your life.

Vancouver is beautiful, albeit expensive. And living there is only worthwhile if you live downtown, otherwise it's just another city.

Stay away from Alberta. I was raised there, and it's a redneck filled shit hole.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba would be least appealing to me, unless you enjoy being isolated in REALLY REALLY flat land with no hills or trees, and enjoy -48C winters.

I loved Toronto as well, and Ontario itself has loads of good cities / spots.

Montreal I loved, but never lived there, only visited. Never had a problem with just English, but then again, I only stayed downtown.

Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, etc.) are great, and extremely friendly people, but you'll probably have a hard time making good friends. They tend to stick to themselves, and if you're not a born & bred Maritimer, getting into their circle is easier said than done.

Honestly, if you can live anywhere, I'd say inland BC somewhere. Canmore, Fernie, Banff, Kimberly, Revelstoke, etc. Absolutely beautiful, good down to earth people, loads to do especially if you like outdoors stuff, etc.

British Columbia is a great place, as mentioned pretty expensive and the pay is not generally up to the cost of the lifestyle. I believe it is one of the most expensive places to live, when taking median pay into consideration, in the world.

Kiopa_Matt is right about Saskatchewan and Manitoba, just fucking brutal there haha.

I guess it depends on what you like. I just got back from Istanbul after the Glory Kickboxing tourny last week, and was blown away. I don't think there is anything in Canada that compares to that place, which could be good or bad depending on what you want.

I have often thought about moving and before I even start to look I write down the top 5-10 thing you would want. Some people love big cities, some people need to own a car, some need a huge place to live.

After you figure out these things then you will have an idea of what type of place you want to live in.

Why do you need a job? Aren't you making money off the interwebz? I was under the impression that any WF member that signed up between 2006-2008 was a 5 figure a day type of guy. Could I have been wrong all this time?

Saskatoon is just an option off the top of my head as i have a buddy living there however -48 degrees isn't really my cup of tea. So i guess I'll have to rethink my options! Thank you for your suggestions!

Don't get me wrong I do love the city and most parts of Turkey. But the orientalist mentality of the local people has become unbearable. I speak Turkish pretty well and was born here, but having not grown up here the cultural differences between the US and here are sort of constantly hitting me in the head. I work as a prep teacher at one of the local colleges in the Aegean region and my monthly salary is around $350. Feeling burn out and under appreciated, so i thought why not just try somewhere else. I grew up in New jersey, had a garage where i tinkered on cars and would kick around a soccer ball with friends in an open field when i had the chance. A Jersey Equivalent would be nice!

I was pulled four figures a day for a year back in 07' haven't struck gold since. Let's just say life happens and you just learn to work with what you have. I would never depend only depend on what i make from the interwebz, but what do i know :love-smiley-085:

Poli sci? You should be heading to Ottawa. Cheap cost of living and better job prospects for your degree.

You are fucked in the head if you go to Alberta, Manitoba or Saskatchewan.

Ottawa if not Toronto if not Montreal.
