Any Drummers Here?

For what it's worth

I've got the Alesis DM10 pro studio: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Alesis-Studio-Professional-Six-Piece-Electronic/dp/B0038YX39U]Amazon.com: Alesis DM10 Studio Kit Professional Six-Piece Electronic Drum Set: Musical Instruments[/ame]

It was a good price for what you actually get

I hammer on it every day, and it's held up great for almost a year now

Might be overkill for a beginner, but I guess my suggestion would be that I was skeptical of alesis electronic drums but found them to be pretty nice, and all their kits are pretty affordable

For a young beginner though, pretty much any electronic kit that makes a decent drum noise and has stuff placed in generally the right spots should be enough to get somebody started, as long as it doesn't break down after a while. I think of my first kit and it really really sucked (like cheap bendable cymbals and stuff), but I turned out just fine as a drummer

Lol, what's up with the trumpet hate?

haha no hate. This was a direct quote from the drummer guy I talked to. He had played trumpet in school band and says, to this day, he plays a mean trumpet...in about zero songs. Which is why he took up drums.

Good to learn drums, but if you wanna have fun without dragging a drum kit around:

Q: What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?

A: You only have to punch the information into a drum machine once...

If you get real drums, you can also get practice pads, which helps to mute the sound (especially the snare).

c)I have no idea if he'll be into this and I really don't want to shell out the big bucks until we know that he is.

First off, I'm not a drummer. However, as a guitar player, I hear parents using this sort of logic all the time. While I can understand it, I don't really agree with it. Like, if I'm 10 years old and really want a guitar, and my parents buy me some cheapo guitar that is impossible to play or get a decent sound out of, that might be discouraging. Whereas a higher end guitar is easier to play and can actually produce a decent sound.

Not sure how you translate that into a v-kit though. I've always wanted one. If he gets tired of it, I'll buy it from you.
