Any of your guys in Austin Tx?

My brother lives there, I visit frequently.
Pros: Cool place, laid back, good bar and music scene, lot's of chicks from UT, everybody is friendly, good town if you're "outdoorsy".
Cons: Shit ton of hipsters and homeless

I made 2 threads asking good spots to live? And now this one says "I picked a city and picked a place, who else lives here?"
I plan on spending a week or so there in the next month to see how much I like it, and then I'll book the house from October-April. I just wanted to see how many affiliates actually live there.
There's a place in Texas called Sugar Land.. sounds sweet

Heh, you're like me. I'm planning on checking out a few cities 6 months at a time. Austin is on my list too.
Live in Dallas, usually take a trip down to Austin every couple of months. Great scene for a young person. 6th street FTW!
Same! I'm heading to Nashville when my lease is up in June, and hope to be scoping out a new place in Austin 6-12 months later.
I went to SXSW (kinda, took advantage of all the awesome free shit going down) two years ago, and really enjoyed myself. Last summer I visited some friends outside Houston for a week, and I was just about ready to give up on Texas altogether.
I decided to spend the weekend in Austin to escape the butthole that is Houston. Despite being pulled over for going 67 in a 65 just outside the city, and being suspected of transporting drugs, I once again fell in love with Austin.
Can't wait to get back there. In fact, I'm now questioning why I'd make a pit stop in TN at all...
Austin is great if you're a pseudo-punk kid who chooses to be homeless as a way to say "fuck you" to your rich daddy... or if you love Army-issue glasses and fixed-gear bicycles. Oh, and if you like flashing your Apple logo everywhere you go, you'll probably be able to find a coffeehouse with your name on it.

You're a negative nancy though, I've rarely heard people say bad things about Austin aside from "there's a lot of hipsters".
I don't plan on being homeless, and like now I plan on spending most of my time at my place working on business. I'm looking for nice scenery, nice weather, and a nightlife if I want to go out on the weekends.

Okay. How about the fact that it's fucking hot as hell in the Summer, the second you leave the city limits you are in a totally different world (not a good one), everything is expensive as hell, traffic is just retarded, and all of the "nature trails, etc" within 20-30 miles are insanely crowded. The entire city is a magnet for all the people trying to escape Texas, who can't actually escape it. It has its good points too, but for the most part, I couldn't stand it.
You make some valid points but Austin rocks. Sorry your experience was bad. Homeless are organized professionals. I saw a fucker get out of new Toyota, cross the street and pull out a sign. I saw a fan pull up at a light and one fucker got out and the fucker at the corner jumped in. Must have been lunch break or something.

I live about 20 miles north of the capital. Downtown Austin is a world different from where I live. I am in more of a suburb with lots of young family's and things. I love everything about Austin. There are some really cool museums downtown, also an IMAX and great eats.
I am 30, married with 3 young kids so what you and I are looking for are worlds apart (I am guessing) but there is lots of fun things to do, the weather is usually hot and sunny which means lots of people prefer outdoorsy things. We have a couple of nice lakes with plenty of places to rent jet skis/boats/etc.
The only thing is Oct.-April is not really the "peak" months around here. Although if I remember right, you live up north and might enjoy a whole winter without snow, etc.

I have lived here or within about 2 hours of here my entire life. I have been to many places and always wonder why someone would want to live anywhere else.
You can easily pick up a 4,000sqft+ house with home theater, etc. for about $350K-$450K depending on where it is. Just something to consider...
