Anyone else in Bangkok right now?

That building was named World Trade Center before changed CentralWorld a few years ago.

People burning banks, department stores, business headquarters, what would you do if you were the govt? My friend's house almost got burned down by them.

Wow. Man, I can't explain how much that fucking headshot upset me. How the FUCK do you live with yourself when you take life from someone like that? That is 100% fucked up. Ruined my day.

And we have fucking oil destroying our oceans right now . . . EVERYTHING IS FUCKED.

With that Oil thing... I don't know if it is because I am in Spain and don't watch much news... but god damn... that thing is leaking thousands of gallons a day for what.... 3 weeks now.... I figured people would be freaking. Is this something that is constantly on the news in the US?

Yeah, it's on the news, and a lot of people are freaking. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Americans are sheep and really don't know what is going on, and don't really care if it doesn't directly affect their lives. Most of my friends are clueless about it.

IMO what is going on it absolutely criminal. They applied dispersant to the water, which prevented a lot of the oil from rising to the surface (and it's highly toxic. It was even banned in the UK). Now, though, there are massive plumes of oil beneath the water, and no one even knows where it's going. Chances are it's heading straight for the Florida Keys and beyond.

All of this, and the BP exec says that the environmental impact with be "very, very modest." For this comment alone I think he should be imprisoned.

It's all fucking appalling. American has officially gone to shit.

I have several good friends who live in Thailand. One of them lives in Bangkok with his family. He saw the writing on the wall, and moved his family to Pattaya a couple of weeks ago. But it's very unsettling... curfews, the violence that's going on so close to them (and could possibly expand beyond Bangkok). When I spoke with him this morning (my time) he mentioned that he may take his family to Hong Kong till things blow over. It's times like these that make me appreciate the U.S. (instead of focusing on all its shortcomings).

I was supposed to spend a few days in Bangkok last month on my way to Phuket, detoured to Pattaya for a couple days instead

this stuff is insane. honestly tho from what i've read it sounds like the government in thailand is fairly authoritarian. my understanding is that the government soldiers started the fighting and shooting the protesters.

I just moved to Bangkok in may. I'm in Khon kaen at the moment.

Well your understanding is completely wrong

Try this The TNR Primer: Thailand | The New Republic

In short,

1. A guy named Thaksin got elected in 2001, promising free healthcare, debt reliefs, and other populist policies.

2. Thaksin owned a huge telecom company. He was accused of corruption, and later, indicted for changing laws to suit his need. Yellow shirt protested. Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 coup after he sold his stakes in his company for $2bn, tax-free.

3. Thaksin party returned to power again after an election. Yellow shit protested again.

4. Court ruled that PM and some of the member of his party were banned for election frauds. Red shirts said court was biased.

5. One faction formerly allied with Thaksin party decided to support the current PM, Abhisit. As a result Abhisit was elected a PM by a parliament vote.

6. Red shirt protesters who supported Thaksin stormed Bangkok business area, demanding parliament dissolve and new election.

7. There are several bombings in Bangkok that left civilians and soldiers dead

8. Clash on Apr 10 left 25 people dead - 5 soldiers . While majority of protesters weren't armed, there were armed forces in protesters shooting soldiers. Red shirt leaders denied allegations with these armed "terrorists", saying they were "fake reds."

9. Sporadic bombings in Bangkok businesses and hotel. More soldiers and cops died. Red shirt leaders said they weren't behind any of these.

10. One of red shirt hardcore leader was shot dead. Several clashes left more protesters and soldiers dead.

11. Today, red shirt leaders said they gave up. But some hardcore protesters wouldn't stop. They started burning shopping center (one of them, the second largest in the region, CentralWorld, has collapsed), banks, and other businesses.

It's surprising they can manipulate that many people to riot and destroy the city.

Crazy. I was planning on going to Thailand on my honeymoon in July. Hopefully it will calm down before then but I think I might just go to Costa Rica instead.

shame to see this in such a great city. that headshot was intense. High caliber shot there, yikes.
