anyone ever see a domain company do this?

So I'm sure everyone has got the emails/spam saying "Hey you own domain.net and I happen to have domain.com for sale if you're interested for the low price of $xxx dollars.

So today I got something similar only they weren't trying to anal rape me, they were just giving me a free alert in the hopes I would go reg it at their registrar or under their affiliate ID.

I think this is not only very cool but seems to be a great business idea, if the domain I owed wasn't purely for spam uses I'd be all over this:

FYI the part that is edited out is a name of a city like "atlantaautorepair.net" I just don't have whois protection on it so I blacked it out.

EDIT: after looking into it further it's a godaddy affiliate.

I get ones regarding expiring domains that are similar to ones I already own. Of course I just go backorder the domain at my registrar for $13.

Not a bad strategy either. Guy is probably making some money if he does it on a large scale.

That would be a lot of work (researching) for only a potential $1.60 commission

I've gotten these before, but I never paid them much attention. It does seem like a smart marketing idea anyone of us could use.
