Anyone ever take BJJ or fighting classes?

I signed up for grappling and BJJ class a couple weeks ago and I swear to god it's by far the best workout I have ever had. On top of being a great workout the shit is super fun.

The dude who was training me my first few times is like the head instructors right hand man...he weighs about 160 and he was kicking the shit out of me and throwing me around like I weighed 90 pounds(I'm 175-180).

If you wanna get in shape, do this. It's kind of weird walking into a room full of "fighters" when you have no sort of fighting/combat experiences, you feel like a dipshit at first but after a while you get broken in and it starts to become a lot of fun.

Tonight was the first night they put me in the general population and let me fight with normal(non instructor) people. It was awesome because I was only slightly dominated tonight by random people as opposed to completely dominated like usual.

I did some Muay Thai last year, I agree it's the best workout I ever had. It was 45 mins cardio routines + 45 minutes fight routines, I didn't get to do any sparring though. In any case, I wasn't ready to fight anyone - after about an hour I was so wasted every time. Gonna start it up again this year. You should definitely keep going with that.
 
lol ^^ I did bjj +kickboxing for 4 years as a teen, don't really know why I stopped. Will do it again eventually, have forgotten pretty much everything.

One thing I learnt, is if you're a newb don't go in and chuck a hissy fit. If some dude has you in a lock, just concede, don't spaz out. It only makes your shit worse, and you look like a fool.
 
Remember: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is only gay if you make eye contact.

Yea, I've been training in some form of martial arts on and off for many years, but I've really fallen in love with Muay Thai (not some watered down cardio-kickboxing crap). I've been training it for the past year, about 3-5 days a week, usually 3 hours/day, and without a doubt it's been by far the best workout I've ever done in my life. It's not unusual to see guys come in like 40-50 lbs overweight and become ripped within 3 months or less, although most guys quit within a week or two lol..

When it comes to martial arts, it's all about time put in and how effective your training is. You'll have times where you feel like you aren't progressing at all and you'll have other times where you feel great, but one things for sure, you will always have someone there to kick the shit out of you and make you feel like a newb, so don't get frustrated. Even the best guys at the gym will still get that feeling of "i can't fucking do shit vs this guy.." once in a while ;)
 
Did Ju-Jitsu for a year in college. Honestly, the stuff was awesome and I took some shit-kickings from the instructor. Grappling is my favorite, but I decided to focus on Water Polo, partying, and studies instead.

Eventually, I plan to get back into it - I'm looking more into self-defense than MMA like some of the crazy roided-up tattoo'd mofo's out here.
 
To all the people saying "it's the best workout I've ever had", you're doing something wrong in your 'regular' workout routine. Oh thats right, you probably don't have one - which is why it's the best workout you've ever had.

You can get ripped without taking an MMA class, just just need self discipline. (what to know how?? just follow this one easy rule... discovered by a mom)

I did muay thai 20 years ago for about 2/3 years and got pretty good, did some competitions, etc. Every now & then I think maybe I'll take up BJJ or some sort of MMA class, but there are no good ones close enough plus I don't have the time. I have a dedicated weight room at home with a squat rack + enough weight for me and for cardio I run up & down the hills around my house (run up, walk down) of an evening.

Anyway, I keep thinking about taking a class until I saw Penn & Teller's Bullshit! episode on martial arts. Basically the chances of getting injured while being mugged are small, the chances of getting injured while doing martial arts are 100% (yes, 100% - everyone gets injured). They concluded that it would be cheaper and easier in the long run to either (a) run away from any fight you encounter and/or (b) hand over all your money & personal items; or (c) get a gun. Also anyone who is in the business of mugging people are going to be big, have lots of street fights under their belt and won't play by the "rules". As soon as you get a takedown and get into a side guard to put an arm bar on him, his friend smashes you over the head with a iron bar or he just shoves his thumb in your eye, grabs your nuts and pops one, etc. (which brings me to another point - ground fighting/wrestling is useless against more than 1 opponent)

So the benefits of doing MMA/BJJ/Martial Arts are pretty much to just increase your self esteem. My self esteem is fine, so I've decided (again!) not to do it. There may be a "personal training" benefit as well - ie. if you have poor self discipline you will get pushed when you go to class, but if you're worried about that you can get a personal trainer (or work harder!).

This is BS. As I said, I was running and going to the gym atleast 5 days out of the week. Running for 30min to 1 hour. I'm in good shape, I'd say I need to lose 10 pounds. My upper body and lower body is cut, I have a 4pack because my bottom 4 abs are covered in a very thin layer of fat. That bottom part of my stomach is the only fat I have on my body. I also have no self esteem issues, I'm a good looking guy.

Point is, I worked my ass of in the gym and these grappling sessions are 10x better a workout than running or lifting weights.

In fact, my muscles are even more sore after fighting than they were after lifting weights.

And to top it all off, fighting is actually fun. Compared to running which is the most boring sport ever and lifting weights which if you put my in a work uniform it would be just like doing some shit manual labor.

So yea, I'll take fighting over that other BS any day of the week, I love it.

I don't own a gun because the laws in Australia are too restrictive to own and maintain one. If I lived in the US, I'd probably have one yeah.

The reason your muscles are sore is because you're working different ones and through a different range of motion that you were at the gym. If you love it, great, keep doing it for the physical training component.

I personally believe that as someone who is already doing physical training anyway, it's not worth it as the benefits (real & perceived) outweigh the costs (mostly time).

I really think you are missing the point about the martial arts. Anyone that studies the martial arts and only learns how to pound someone is not actually learning the art. I will certainly admit that the martial arts are not the be all and end all of self defense. I studied Hsing I Kung Fu for years and I know for a fact that Mike Tyson would still kick the shit out of me unless I could hit him with a brick from a distance and then run for my life screaming like a little bitch.
 
I'd rather skate/surf, I have a few friends who's cocky as fuck because they know some "Tae Kwan Do" (black belts) back in HS and they got their ass-kicked for a change. Martial Arts are not for assholes if you live in a country where people own guns.
 
I trained under Carlson Gracie Jr. for two years and American top team for two years. Then something happened, I outgrew it.

I watch a few UFC fights every now and then, and still roll on the mat once or twice a year but it got old. Now my recreational sport is this:

Clyde: I agree, once you own a gun martial arts seem rather pointless.
 
Learned some BJJ from a purple belt under Relson Gracie for about a year, then I moved and haven't gone back to it since because there are no good schools in this area. Shit sucks. Would love to start again, but refuse to pay good money for a school without an equally good pedigree.
 
Some people are motivated differently. Some people push themselves to get in shape because they want to be in shape. Other people push themselves to get in shape because they're tired of getting beat on in their MMA class.

Confidence is key. Martial arts help with confidence and focus, but so do a lot of other activities. I think the main benefit is showing you that fighting isn't so bad. There's a lot of fear out there.

Had a whole slew of new guys/girls start at the jail this last week. So many of them are terrified of getting hurt. It would do well for each of them to get at least one punch in the face, so they know what to expect and how to react appropriately.

Actually, funny that the guy posting below you mentioned Wing Chun because I just remembered I took classes on that for 2 years about 5 years ago (only went 1-2 times per week so I wasn't really that dedicated).

What aspect of the 'art' are you talking about? The personal development, inner peace, meditation, self discipline etc? Yeah sure you can learn all that.. but you can do that by going to church too.

Face it, most people go to do martial arts nowdays to "kick ass". If that's what you want to do, might as well accept it - but also accept there's always someone bigger, meaner, better trained, stronger, faster, etc. etc. Then there's always the gun angle.. UFC 123 - (Brock vs Glock) - Brock Lesnar vs 9mm. I'm betting my money on the 9mm.
