I'm about to purchase a new 8 core mac pro, but I'm not sure if I can run my own screens. n the apple site, it says the graphics are compatible with the apple range of monitors - does this mean I can't run the standard 19" monitors I'm currently using with my PC?

If anyone could shed some light on this I would appreciate it.

Also, any quibbles with the pro? Any problems I should be aware of before blowing $5000???

Thanks,
VCM

I haven't had any problems with mine and I've had it for a few months.

Thanks Sup3rnova,

I vaguely remember seeing pics of your new setup on your blog...

Did you go for the apple screens? Do you know if screens from other manufacturers work as well on the pro?

Thanks again for our comments.

I have Mac Pro, exactly same model as you are considering. It uses 100% same display adapters (ATI & Nvidia) than normal Windows PCs so any monitor that works with normal PC will work with your Mac Pro. Apple is just trying to sell their own displays (which aren't very good imo).

Btw, I really recommend that you buy some extra RAM with it and don't settle with 2GB. It's just so much waste of Mac Pro if you use it with 2GB. I got it with 2GB and bought 4GB (~$150) more and with 6GB it runs so smooth.

I upgraded the ram in my macbook a year ago at Other World Computing for 200 bucks. The best prices I found. :)

8 core? Are you running multiple virtual machines simultaneously or do you just have a lot of surplus income?

Ha ha, I don't even know what you're talking about - multiple virtual machines!?!?!?

So, I guess it's the latter then.

But seriously, I'm sick to death of Microsoft and I recently bought a macbook and I'm enjoying the experience.

I don't want a computer built into a screen, so my only other option is the Pro.
Plus, I buy a new PC every year - I'm hoping the Mac pro will last 3 years.

Thanks for your comments... VCM

Any more thoughts on the RAM situation? I would love to upgrade to even 4GB but apple want another $700 (I'm paying UK prices - don't get me started on this fuckin' rant)...

What do I need to look for when purchasing RAM from a third party? I know it has to be quite specific to work with the Mac.

I have two Dell 30" 3007WFP monitors hooked up to my Mac Pro. I've had my Mac since November '06, and no problems at all.

For RAM just go to Other World Computing and select which Mac Pro you have...it's pretty simple.

That's all that OWC (post above) sells. Mac hardware. I bought 2gb for my macBook. They came highly recommended by the Mac community here at my place of employment. They have a little wizard you go through to make sure you get the right stuff too.

I really find it funny that you're all quibbling about how to save money on RAM and ignoring that fact that he's buying the model with 8 fucking cores. I'm really curious - why do you need all that processing power? Are you doing high-end 3D rendering? Maybe some complicated CAD design? Or are you just going to have 7 copies of Doom 3 open while you check your email?

Well shit fuck damn! OMG you're right. If you are buying the dual quad, you might as well have Apple rape you for another several hundred putting 16gb of RAM in that biatch.

I'm the same way. My BMW 740 is almost out of gas. Where is the cheapest place to get another one!

Pretty much the last option...

The way I see it:

- I need a new computer
- I want to run multiple screens
- I wanna make the full switch to Apple, but don't want an iMac.

What are my choices? There is only the Mac Pro.

I could order the quad core, but I would only save $600, and am I not right in thinking that the 8-core is twice as powerful for just $600 more?

With 8 cores, I won't have to upgrade as soon as I would with 4 cores...

And with the 8 core machine, I can add ram at any time if it feels a little slow at any point. It would be more difficult to add another quad core processor.

I can understand your argument that I won't use all this processing power (maybe on some photoshop rendering?), but I won't need a new computer for a few years...

Care to expand on this? What would you recommend instead?

You'll need to go to the Apple store to figure out if OS X is made for you or not. I went with a Macbook Pro since I needed portability. I don't regret the switch one bit.
