We are going to be getting into doing video laptop reviews for our forum, and I want to consider the option of monetizing them. Maybe a short pre-roll - nothing too crazy.

Is anyone doing any video monetizing here? What are you using? I got accepted into the Adbrite InVideo program, but I am not sure that's the best choice. (Their other products have sucked for us.) Anything else I should be considering?

Thanks!

Laura

Revver.com

I am working on a CPA site that will also monetize videos. I figured what the heck. Why not make money on both ends.....

Hey Laura, I was just blogging today about monetizing with video.

Theres a very cool FREE app that will let you embed affiliate links
and captions right over the top of video.

Here's an example: It's a yoga and fitness video
with affiliate links embedded right into the video.

Pretty cool!

Add Affiliate Links to Video - Free and Easy

What do you guys think of that video example? It's just a quickie an AM made to show affiliates what could be done.

If you were promoting jet skis for example, just go to YouTube and
grab a cool or funny jet ski video and stick a little pre-sell and your affiliate links on top.

And again it's free! Love it!

Oh Laura, forgot to mention...

For monetizing your laptop reviews you may want to try adding
affilate links to TheNerds, one of my 5 Star clients. They pay out some
of the highest commissions on computers and electronic gear.
TheNerds Electronics, Software and Computer Hardware Affiliate Program

Of course you can join Buy.com or Amazon too but payments are pretty low.

Depending on your readers - if you they are buyers link to laptops,
if you think most of them already have laptops then link to batteries
and accessories.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Are you going to post your videos on YouTube, too? It'll likely get you some additional exposure, especially if your reviews are interesting.

Thanks for the ideas, guys!

Linda - Thank you for the link, I will be sure to check that out. I ideally, I would LOVE to embed affiliate links in my reviews! I also tried The Nerds a while back, but they didn't convert well, and admittedly, they don't sell anything super exciting in the laptop area. We have found our best converting affiliates are the big guys - Dell, Alienware, etc. They do really well for us and they are so easy to work with because they email coupon
updates constantly.

Okay, here's the premise of what I want to do:

Video laptop reviews are really useful because you get to acutally *see* someone touching it and using it. So many people buy laptops without seeing them in person, so this really helps. (CNET does some quick reviews that are cool.)

Cute girl reviews the laptops in the video. (Yes, I called myself cute, and no I am not that self-centered. :p)

Cute girl also tells you where to buy said laptops at the end. :)

Cute girl encourages you to share the video with others. :D (And makes it easy to do so.)

So would you watch? I figure putting a girl in there is somewhat better than a guy. It puts a different spin on it, at least. It's a bonus that this girl owns the largest laptop forum on the internet, so it's a perfect match. :anon.sml:

Thoughts or advice? I bet I could find a UT student studying video who would help me...

Another tool to consider, which I just blogged about, is Web Video Zone.

It enables you to make the video and player clickable.

And if you place the video in multiple places and want to periodically update the content, you can dynamically update all placements of the video.

Ooooooh, that's pretty darn cool. Thanks for posting about it!

I have been trying Revver for about 6 months, made about $90 so far, you get up to 50 c a click.

My ratio is 50 views = one click.

Im also lookin at Adbrite Video but its still in Beta, looks ok but from what I gather advertisers choose who they want to advertise on, so for most of the time you may not have any ads!

I tried Valueclick media they do $10 per cpm but I could not get them to work on both my PC and Mac, they look the most promising.

BrightRoll

What you can also do with a player is provide it a playlist.
The playlist consist of the pre-roll and the video, I've been looking at BrightRoll intergration

I see two distinct avenues here.

1. You put it up on an external site and let someone else provide the advertisers and take a cut.

Pros:
They pay for the bandwidth.
They also help promote your video to other websites, possibly creating a viral marketing storm.

Cons:
Lower CPC.
Little to no control over ads.

2. You put it up on your own site and add your own advertising.

Pros:
Able to match advertisers to videos better.
Can split-test different advertisers.

Cons:
Must provide your own bandwidth.
Must provide method to create viral marketing and be able to support extended bandwidth requirements.

I love some of the ideas you guys have provided, but I just don't want to take on video. Audio streaming is bad enough. Video becomes a whole new monster.
