I just ordered an Archos 705. I know a few people were looking into getting one on this board. I did some research before I made the purchase and have a few warnings for ya about it. Apparently they skimp on some of the necessities.

Archos Tips
1) It only comes with one method of charging it and thats through usb to a computer (kinda defeats the purpose if you ask me). You also can't use any aftermarket ac/dc-usb chargers with it. It does come with an ac adapter plug however you have to buy the actual adapter from the accessories page.

2) The car adapters they show don't work with it.

3) The case that comes with it only holds the actual player, no adapters nothing. So you have to purchase the travel case listed on the page

4) Even though it has the features the actual product doesn't contain the plugs needed to record tv. You have to buy the DVR station.

5) You have to have some sort of tuning device plugged into it. So if you have standard cable you can't just plug it in. It has to go through the tv first then use some sort of video output to plug into it.

6) It won't store copy protected dvd's. It'll still use divx and transfer everything from your computer but as far as dvd's go it won't copy and certain ones won't work at all.

7) To play mpeg videos you have to buy the cinema plugin software from them.

8) It won't connect to the wifi until you buy the web browser plugin.

That info took me awhile of getting, most of the reps on the customer service have never even touched or seen the product...weird. Hope that helps some people so they don't get a huge disappointment when it arrives.

If the USB is simply providing a charge, there has to be a way to charge via A/C. Have you looked into some sort of AC USB Charger? A quick google search shows lots of results.

yep. There's an plug on the side of it where you can charge with an AC adapter which is only available as an accessory. It doesn't actually come with it. An AC USB charger won't work. Something about the voltage they said, which was weird. I was under the impression that all USB is +5v
