Are .GIF's really the best we've come up with?

I'm trying to put a partially transparent graphic on top of a gradient background and I want to punch babies. Nothing is looking right.

Why can't someone introduce a transparent-supporting graphic file format that doesn't require all these shenanigans?

Oh well... I'm punching the clock and calling this one a day. Drinkin' time.

.png files are transparant but some browsers they dont show up as transparant.

I've used the PNG IE transparency hack before, but personally, I think it's just easier to use a GIF for the files that have it. They're not that bad.
