As an affiliate, what to write in college app for employment?

Your counsellor is a fool. I'm married to a professor who does admissions. They get bored stupid of seeing the same shit over and over again in applications.

If you have anything that will make you stand out (in a good way - like running your own business), put it in.

By the way, something else about college. That thesis that you spend your entire final year slaving over, and sweat for weeks writing up? Know how long they spend reading it?

15 minutes. If it's interesting.

This is sad but true, the vast majority of the world especially in academia has no concept of working for your self or owning your own business. It is a foreign concept that is simply beyond their ability to understand. Your much better off telling them you work for some one else even retail is better in their mind because it is "real".

This is SO true.

You need to start thinking about what would impress the people who are reading your application. The concept of owning and earning your paycheck is something they dont understand.

You would be better off listing a paper-route as previous job experience than affiliate marketer.

Look at what is a hot topic/buzz in the liberal world and put a spin on it... green tech, non-profits, arts, etc...

I don't see what's wrong with writing 1099 contractor as a job. If you are properly filing taxes, they would eventually find out anyway if it really mattered. You have essay space, use it to describe your achievements in the business. It should work in your favor, especially if you are majoring in business or even CS; they are looking for things you made happen that would demonstrate a high probability of academic success. They also want to know if you are gonna go out there and use their labs to build another google.

Looks like Harvard is OUT and community college is IN!

Talk about kicking puppies and touching children. They gobble that kind of stuff up like turkeys.

OK, I don't have my own company. I'm writing, "in partnership with (aff network)"

The rest of my essays already focus too much on business (not affiliate, but like my idea for better advertising platform that would blow facebook, my little VC I set up with friends to invest in each other business) to the point that is disgusting in an academic environment. (I'm quoting him)

So I have less than 15 mins to impress him/her.

so let me get this straight - you think what the fuck your work history is will effect whether or not you get in college?

or better yet

you are going to listen to your "counselor" who suggested you lie BECAUSE you are self-employed. You are not an employee of any affiliate network. You are not in a partnership (in the formal sense) with any of the networks. You work for yourself. Write the name of your company on that line. If you don't have a corp or llc then not only do you need a college education, you also need an attorney.

besides attorney, I also need to be 18 first.

Ok maybe I'll write "affiliated with (network)" instead.

Marketing Affiliate, affiliated with Media Breakaway.

wrong - you have a guardian create the legal entity for you if you can't. They would be responsible if Oprah/Harpo came knockin'.

Since you are under 18 and assuming you are a male, why not just hit up ChrisS. I am sure he would "employ" you.

Yeah, this is exactly what I did. My LLC is being 'managed' by my parents until my 18th birthday and then it all shifts to being under my name.

Battlefork, just write self employed.

Okay stop, stop all the bullshit please.
As a college student here is what I did when I applied for College. Every college looks for "different" things. Some looks at marks while others look at your portfolio. If you have a impressive portfolio in the industry of Affiliate Marketing. FUCKING SHOW IT PLEASE. Don't give them any sort of bullcrap of self employed cuz that aint gonna cut it. If you got the talent and you made money off affiliate marketing. Tell them and they will love you as a business man.

If you are having problems explaining it, I'm gonna quote this from Nick's blog.

Of course, when you are asked by a family member to explain what you’re doing, you may have to give them a little more detail. The analogy Nickycakes uses is one that was given to him a while ago by one of his affiliate managers: Let’s say that Coca-Cola wants to sell more Coke. They already have their own ad campaigns running on TV, and possibly the internet. But, they want to sell more. So Coca-Cola sets up a program where anyone who so desires can make their own advertisements for coke products which link to the coke website. For every case of coke sold through one of these links, Coke agrees to pay the “affiliate” $1 commission. Pretty simple.

Do the exact same shit to your counselor or whoever the fuck that's doing the interview.

If all you are doing is filling this out on the computer.

Specific nature of work: Affiliate Marketing (Internet Marketing)
Employer: (Your incorporated company)+(Your position)
Approx dates: 10/2008 to 10/2009
School Year: Yes
Summer: Yes
Hours per week: (Write down the real hours)

Show them you are the real deal. They cant fucking reject you just because you are running a Internet advertising company full-time.

Dude..

Employer: battlefork media (or whatever the fuck you wanna call it)
Position: Founder, President
Description: Explain

Who cares if you are under age and your parents manage the LLC. They aren't going to check the business records with the secretary or something. Don't tie in the affiliate networks at all.

Oh My God...okay this kid really needs some education. Just go back to school pls.

Thanks for an illuminating reply.

Guys, I'm in the extremely paranoid mode. They accept like 150 international students (5% acceptance rate) so I have to be careful with everything I put in.

Say that you started an Internet marketing service where you helped merchants advertise their products via various advertising platforms such as Google Adwords, ect. Revenue exceeded $XXX,XXX. Throw numbers at them, even if it's only a few thousands. Most admission officers will be impressed. Heck, it beats being the standard "captain of the track team" ect that they see 50x a day.

Just because you arent a registered business doesnt mean you cant claim you started a service. Use your motivation to make money as a positive.
