How can we profit?

r

Step 1: Figure out a way to travel 4000 light years in just 4 minutes.
Step 2. Haul planet back to Earth and park in your backyard.
Step 3: Mine
Step 4. Profit??
Step 5: Put big diamond grille on teeth?

[edit: actually, fuck that. I'm not giving that idea away, because there's probably good coin in it. I'll do it myself instead]

wouldn't diamonds be devalued down to the price of sand if that was brought to earth?

Pointless.

Wouldn't be pointless. If you saw it coming, you could look for what would become the new hot, rare item and either invest in it or popularize it.

It would also be super awesome for a lot of industrial companies and make certain tasks more cost effective. Miners, for instance, often prefer diamond-tipped drill bits for their improved performance - but use various metal tips instead because they are considerably cheaper.

I swear, all you boys can think about is jewelry...

Great - we can dig further. BFD.

Unless we can get further in space with a lot of diamonds - that shit is useless. Just probably very pretty to look at through a telescope.

I swear, all you girls think about is digging holes and shit.

You've obviously never used a drill or a saw.

Nothing that needed diamond tip, no. I understand that whole bit - but its not like we'd be digging in the dirt for resources if we had means to get the diamonds there. If we're doing hypothetical scenarios of getting to the diamonds and using them - I figured we'd stop the hole digging somewhere during the whole space flight expansion.

Plus imagine all the job loss on Africa over this. Poor fellows won't be able to happily mine diamonds to put in vaults for North Americans.

Never heard of synthetic diamond? They can be made superior to natural diamonds relatively inexpensively...

Of course - and if you're into jewelry, they can make lovely, sparkly pieces that cost a fraction of the real thing. From what I understand, though, synthetics are pretty energy-intensive to make, there aren't a ton of places that do it, and their operations don't scale easily (although oil drilling seems to be having an effect on investment in synthetics).

I almost took on a reputation management client that ran a gold mining operation and somehow we got to talking about the subject and he mentioned that the synthetic diamond bits just weren't practical, or even as stable as real diamond-tipped bits. I'm not sure why that would be, as I'm definitely no drilling expert, and it's entirely possible that he was speaking from some long-outdated experience - but I remember it pretty distinctly. Another mine I toured a few months later didn't go into detail on the topic, but they specifically said they used carbide tipped drill bits because they were by far the best compromise between cost and performance (within their line of work - again, no idea about other types of drilling/cutting/etc).

But anyway...that's way more than what probably needed to be said, given that this is all a totally hypothetical situation anyway. The point was that there would be plenty of other great uses for a huge influx of diamonds. :)
