Growth by market development
In this quadrant, you should take existing competences into new markets (preferably
into contiguous ones to reduce commercial risk – options involving significant
commercial risk should be analysed together with the product/market choices
discussed below). Clearly, this involves much greater risk than a cleaning-up operation
and commensurate returns should be expected. But be careful: the risks of venturing into new markets, sometimes without an effective marketing function,
constitute one of the hazards discussed in Chapter 11.
 
Rapid growth by diversification
In this quadrant, you should develop new competences and simultaneously take
them into new markets where significant growth opportunities are known to exist.
This option should be analysed carefully in conjunction with the diversification
option discussed below under product/market choices, because it involves the
highest level of risk – but, enticingly, the highest potential returns!
Once core competences are identified and growth choices analysed, project
teams (or individuals) can be assigned to them, improving those in existing
markets or developing new ones for existing and new markets, depending on the
chosen strategy.
