The issue is not the police. The police are given authority by those who have been elected by a majority of voters. They are merely a symptom of a larger problem: democracy.
With democracy, the whims of a majority (or a well-organized minority) can be used as a lever to infringe upon the liberty and freedom of others. Mises wrote, "as soon as we surrender the principle that the state should not interfere in any questions touching on the individual's mode of life, we end by regulating and restricting the latter down to the smallest detail."
What we are seeing is not a surprise. It is a foregone conclusion, given our foreign policy built on imperialism, and the populace's trust in the state's ability to protect them.
Voters do this. Your parents. Your friends. The people you see in your local coffee joint and grocery store. They cast their votes without understanding how doing so furthers the deterioration of liberty. Though democracy is a useful platform for quelling political volatility, it is a nasty business.
As for these drones... we'll look back in 20 years and wish we could go back to a time when our liberty was only infringed upon by drones. Societies constantly shift toward more freedom or less. They are never static.
Guess which direction we're going.
