ATTN: Houston residents! Big Brother is watching you

The issue is not the police. The police are given authority by those who have been elected by a majority of voters. They are merely a symptom of a larger problem: democracy.

With democracy, the whims of a majority (or a well-organized minority) can be used as a lever to infringe upon the liberty and freedom of others. Mises wrote, "as soon as we surrender the principle that the state should not interfere in any questions touching on the individual's mode of life, we end by regulating and restricting the latter down to the smallest detail."

What we are seeing is not a surprise. It is a foregone conclusion, given our foreign policy built on imperialism, and the populace's trust in the state's ability to protect them.

Voters do this. Your parents. Your friends. The people you see in your local coffee joint and grocery store. They cast their votes without understanding how doing so furthers the deterioration of liberty. Though democracy is a useful platform for quelling political volatility, it is a nasty business.

As for these drones... we'll look back in 20 years and wish we could go back to a time when our liberty was only infringed upon by drones. Societies constantly shift toward more freedom or less. They are never static.

Guess which direction we're going.

This has been popping up in the new more and more - especially related to drug trafficking. Cops around the country have been...

-Using infra-red detectors to scan houses in neighborhoods for ones that are too "hot" - they likely are growing pot, etc, in the house

-Using electric bills to see who is using "too much" electricity and then getting a search warrant.

This is complete and utter bullshit naturally.

The one I bolded is actually illegal. In the video below, a guy set up a trap to make the house seem "hot", when all it had inside was 2 little christmas tree plants. Surveillance cameras all over the house. Cops lied on an affidavit to get the warrant, claiming the house had 80 marijuana plants and $19,000 cash inside. Odessa, TX. Guy put up a sign basically telling them they were fucked. The guy who runs "Kop Busters" is an ex-cop.

I believe somebody on [H]ard|Forum had their house raided because a Folding@home server room in their house was really hot and used a lot of electricity.

It probably wouldn't be too hard, and the amount of money it would cost the department would be awesome!

I bet those UAVs aren't very cheap.

No, it's not. It used to be that BC Hydro would turn a blind eye to excesive paid (not stolen) electricity use or you might get a nice call from them offering helpful tips on how to reduce your electrical bill. Now they just show up with RCMP in tow.

Here are some stories from the US about the same sort of thing. Sounds a lot like they are using electricity bills as the first indicator of something suspicious, then following that up with IR flyovers and other surveillance...
