"When Holden exported its Commodore SS to the US as the Pontiac G8 GT, it cost about $30,000, roughly $15,000 less than it costs here."

You can't call yourself a balla until you buy a luxury car in Australia.

If you can afford to spend $80k on a car, you can afford to pay another $40k in taxes.

Also a lot of it has to do with dodgy currency exchange conversions - car companies claim that it price doesn't fluctate because they lock in prices but I've seen the Aussie dollar dip (this is a while back when it was trading at $0.7USD) and they use this to push up the price - when the dollar swings the other way (as it is now) the price doesn't budge and they cite having hedged against swings as the reason.

We also tax petrol/gasoline a shitload in Australia and it's because we have a very sparse population - so road upkeep is more expensive per person.

Personally I don't really understand dropping $100k+ on a car, but that's just me.

Except that luxury taxes don't work because that's not at all the case. There's a reason most countries don't have a luxury tax: it screws over the middle class even more than it screws over the rich.

Try buying a luxury car in Thailand. A Porsche 911 costs about $500,000 here thanks to the crazy import taxes. Even a basic Mercedes Benz C Class will set you back $100,000.

I just moved to this god forsaken place. Been here about 2 months and so far its just a very expensive America, minus the things that make America great (mexican food lol). The weak dollar is not helping my case either.

Really? Which city did you locate to?

I spent a few month in Australia on business a while back ago. Sydney was just outstanding. Stunning beaches, excellent restaurants. A decent bottle of wine could be had for under $10 with an usually magnificent meal.

The food was good even in a small town like Dubbo. Or the steaks were, at least.

Let's not forget the oil lobby targeting the USA... They'd do anything to sell more oil, the real profit center, so I can't believe that this isn't somehow holding down the real prices of Cars unnaturally here.

Man you have to pay that for a car plus worry about kanagroos kicking you in the head and numerous venoms snakes and spiders. I do love your women though, they are always DTF.

^Don't forget about all the Croc's they gotta fight on their way in to work each day, -If they can get their walking upside down... Dangerous place that Oz...

its all about taxes, production and also purchasing power. In USA you get xxx,xxx purchasers of a rubbish Ford, but in ozz you for e.g. will only get x,xxx purchasers. Larger volumes make for better bottom line reports
