Just go. If your shit gets stolen that's part of the adventure. Maybe next time you can bike across America and sleep in a hammock the entire time:

I was traveling around Asia while running my small media company a couple of years ago. I traveled for like 3 months and I did bring my laptop. No problem at all. Lots of sun and chilling on the beach and mabye and hour or two sitting on the balcony with my laptop using the hotels wireless (while having a chang ;) ). I didnt have to spend so much time maintaing the sites. Just some simples updates, answering emails and paying some bills. It worked good. Yeah, often 1, sometimes 2 hours per day.

Asia is wonderfull. I did have the best time of my life. After i finish school I will do the same trip again but staying longer and work from there. Bring your laptop and check in at hotels having free wireless.. or use the internet cafes. They are everywhere.
like she(?) said. most guys in an asian internet cafe wouldn't know there ass from there elbow. although i'm based here i do travel a lot, visa running, island hopping, upcoming Malaysian grand prix(yay!), etc. i just have a sub notebook and iphone in my bag and use a thumbdrive with roboform portable on it. hit an internet cafe each morning and night to check bids using the thumbdrive. sorted. you're only problem will be keeping up the earning levels as campaigns inevitably falter. but i'm sure you can hire a nice hotel for a few days and build some new campaigns if need be. most hotels over $35 a night have free wifi here now as do most cool guesthouses. its kind of a big selling point for them. fire up the laptop, do some work for a few hours and bank for the next few weeks.

good luck, have fun & stay away from the ladyboys ;)

Hey man,

I've done it / am doing it. I spent the last 6 months backpacking through S.E. Asia, with a Lenovo Thinkpad x61s (2lbs) in my backpack. I bluetooth tethered my GSM phone to the laptop and did lots of work from island in the South of Thailand (30 hrs for 99 baht through AIS PrePaid Sim)

Completely possible, although trust me, the temptation to enjoy life is hard to resist. I've HQ'd in Bangkok for a while to get some serious work done.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ping me.

Oh and as for getting shit stolen, I never flashed my laptop around and never act like your typical high rolling farang. Those are the guys who get their shit stolen.

I also had a lightweight metal mesh to go around my backpack which I locked up to whatever was stationary in the guest house / bungalow I was staying in. It's too much work to cut through, there are tons of rooms waiting for people shit to get stolen so they'll just move on. :)

Hey guys, thanks for all your tips. I didn't expect this thread to take off the way it did.
From what i've gathered so far i should...
1) get a netbook - I thought about this, but what advantage is it to having a laptop? Ok its smaller, but i cant have it with me all the time. I will still need to leave it at a hotel/hostel when im out for the night. I guess i need to lock it up and hope for the best
2) If using an internet cafe, use a flashdrive with a program like roboform on it.
3) Encrypt all your data on your laptop - any good programs you guys recommend?
4) Have a blast!

I guess the big thing is just to go out and enjoy myself. Can't be worried about all the small details. If shit happens, life goes on. Plenty of money to be made out there.

one very very big thing that i tell all my mates to do but they never do ... TRAVEL LIGHT. seriously you'll feel like a twat when you're lugging some 80LB backpack around and you realise you can buy (fake) armani jeans and the whatnot for a dollar... not too mention sweating the fuck up everywhere you go..
