probably faked by the media to demonize mushrooms. either that or other 'drugs' were involved and/or they were mentally unstable to begin with and wouldnt have done something like this regardless. either way the story went mainstream for the wrong reasons.

Where I went to college, I use walk out of a cow field with a trash bag full of shrooms... I mean fucking Santa Claus style! And every party I went to had mushroom tea available... No one ever did anything but laugh all night and maybe puke a bit!
