Best Cities to Live 2011

Canada has been balling these last couple of years. Sorry for talking shit on so much while I was in high school, Canada, you are indeed the "better USA."

good luck affording a house here. (vancity)

Same as Melbourne. If you want to live in a decent neighborhood (and you do, otherwise you might as well live in some other bumblefuck city) you're looking at $700,000+ easily and that's not even for a nice house. Even a one bedroom apartment is going to set you back $300,000+

My folks house just got revalued for $2,500,000 and that's only a three bedroom place 15 minutes on a tram out of the city. Although it does have a big fuck off garden.

Still the best city by far and it probably warrants the high housing prices. Melbourne is Australia's NYC.

wow, not surprising but australia dominates a lot of that list.
I wouldn't mind living there at all.

Canada is also awesome. I just couldn't handle the weather.

Australia represent! I agree with tencentpiece though. Housing in Melbourne and Australia in general is fucking expensive.

I imagine it is probably due to the centralisation of the Australian population. The general rule in Australia is that each state (QLD exception) has one giant city and little else. Example: the city of Melbourne has about 4,000,000 residents, which according to Wikipedia would place it as the second biggest city in America after NY. Obviously definitions of city/metro areas vary, but it is a good indication of the centralisation & urbanisation of Australia.

In all honesty though, I wouldn't mind re-locating to the US. Politically and culturally I think it would be a better fit for me. If only the US would move to a more skills based immigration system.

Haha I guess the grass always seems greener...here I am in Toronto still freezing my ass off and looking up Australian property etc on google. What's the low down on Perth?

was in toronto a month ago freezing my ass off - now im in BC freezing my ass off... counting down to days to the A4D meetup just to feel some california warmth.

BUT in the spring/summer, british columbia is definitely the place I'd want to be

T.O FTW

If any of you actually make it to Toronto and want the local perspective, let me know, it'll be easy to show you why we consistently rank. I live in one of the in-demand neighborhoods called "King West" which is right downtown (Yes, people actually want to live downtown here and pay a hefty premium for it).

We have a wide array of clubs (one called guvernment is ranked in the Top 10 in the world, is open to 7 am and holds over 5000 people), piles of restaurants, shops and some of the neatest looking and intellectually attractive women (of every kind of flavor from around the word). Case & Point: I found my Chinese wife here.

Just avoid the winter, like pretty much everywhere in Canada, its suicidal cold and goes from Nov > April (except Vancouver / Vancouver Island, where it only seems to snow for 5 or 6 days and everyone panics). The summer is the best time, especially in early September, which is when TIFF goes down (Toronto International Film Festival) and the city goes off the hinges with A-listers and rockstars. I know some of you have already been here for that and know how that show does gown.

Oh yeah, if you're arriving with USD, you might want to bring a little extra to convert, since the Canadian dollar is worth than the American Peso these days!

Melbourne is boring as fuck and expensive to live in. Half a million for my 2 bedroom apartment 20km from city center.

It's definitely expensive, but it's not boring. If you don't like sport then sure, there is a fuck ton of art stuff going on all the time. If you do like sport - then you're probably in the best city in the world to experience it all in.

Still have this issue with Australia...

While Australia only ranks ninth in terms of contact with venomous spiders, per capita, at .14 deaths per 1,000,000 people, it is still a place with plenty of deadly spiders. In fact, many feel that Australia may have the most deadly spiders on Earth.

Just some of the spiders found in Australia that can harm humans include:

• The Australian Funnel-Web Spider is one of the most dangerous in the world and will often bite rather than run away. It is typically found within 100 km of Sydney and its toxin is highly toxic to primates. Males have more potent venom than females and are often encountered in the summer time. Bites from the males have resulted in death if medical attention is not sought.

• The Redback Spider does not bite often but when it does it is highly toxic and dangerous for the elderly and children. Roughly 20 percent of those bitten by the spider require treatment. There have been no deaths since 1956 when the antivenom was created and most of the bites are from female spiders. Typical symptoms usually involve mild pain that is short-term. Of course, bites can also cause extreme pain and sweating, as well as swelling and swollen lymph nodes. Other issues that can result from the bite include seizure, coma, respiratory failure and more depending on the person who was bitten.

• The Mouse Spider is a burrowing spider that has a deadly venom, which can cause serious harm to humans. Severe symptoms can develop, which require emergency medical treatment but bites are rare and there have been no recorded human deaths.

• The Australian Huntsman Spiders are not very aggressive but they will defend their nests and make threat displays to humans who tread too closely. They can move rapidly and they will often enter houses. IF you are bit, they symptoms are very unpleasant but not life-threatening.

• The White-Tailed Spider is not as dangerous as other spiders, but it is still not pleasant to be bit by one. Its bite usually causes the same type of symptoms as a bee sting, but on occasion nausea, vomiting and headache can develop.
