On the firing line
Since I upgraded my machine, I decided to see what computer gaming is like (vs. console gaming). I've never played any "serious" computer games. Lots of free flash ones, etc, but my old machine could barely run those, and until the upgrade my new one couldn't even run my flight sim.

So, yesterday I stopped by Best Buy and picked up Fallout 3, based solely on the commercials (it looked cool) and the fact that it should be able to put my new card to the test.

Anywhooooo...so far Fallout 3 kicks ass! If this is a sample of what I've been missing, then I'm hooked.

I'm not sure how it runs with other cards, but with the setup I have now:

  • 2.4 ghz Quad Core
  • 6 gig RAM
  • Nvidia 9800 GT
  • 650 watt psu
  • blah, blah, blah
It looks awesome! After about 8 hours of gaming, no glitching, lag, weird shit, and the fan runs silent (I'm sure it's running, I just can't hear it.).

Back to my original question: What other games should I look into? What are your favorites?

Bioshock is an amazing game, if you haven't tried it you should give it a go. You might like STALKER, too. Also depending on if you're into "high fantasy" you may like Oblivion. Made by the same people that did Fallout 3. Using the same engine, actually.

I saw Bioshock on the 360, looks badass. Heard Oblivion is cool, don't know much about it. Never heard of Stalker.

How different is the average computer version of a game (like Bioshock) compared to its console counterpart? Are they generally better / worse and in what ways?

Bioshock. It's short, but it's a fucking masterpiece.

Also, go buy the Orange Box. It comes with Half-Life 2 and it's two expansion packs (pretty good single player first person shooter), Portal (first person puzzle game), and Team Fortress 2 (excellent online first person shooter).

+1 L4D. game is intense.
be prepared for a killer loss in productivity if you play, it's addictive+random+endless zombie hordes.

Mike you gotta check this out: Crysis Warhead

most eye candy FPS game out there for now. although i think you have to overclock your cpu and upgrade your gpu if you want to play this with decent frame rate and highest image quality setting if you are going to play with 22 inch or bigger monitor.

seeing is believing:

dont forget to opt for "watch in high quality" (you know youtube degrade image quality and dont do justice for this game in real world performance)

Crysis Warhead was fucking great! A bit short (but then, I eat most FPSs for breakfast) mad rush if you like playing god.
(Taking out a whole camp of enemies with the suit's speed power and a shotgun - fun times)

Seriously depends on what sorts of games you like.

If you're into RTS, Red Alert 3 brings back all the joys of the original, with way better graphics. Nothing beats real actors in stupid costumes hamming it up right before you whip out some tanks on spider legs to kick the Allies in the arse.

If you're digging Fallout, try Deadspace.

Left For Dead is awesome, but not unless you've got the lights out, and full surround sound with THQ or EAX support. You need to play that game properly.

Also, if you were a fan of ye olde Lucas Arts point and click adventures, Sam & Max is back. Not exactly taxing on even a 4 year old computer, but it IS fun.

anyone play gta4 on pc? I heard the gameplay is great but reading the amazon reviews it looks like lots of people are having problems running the game itself.

Harvey, I like FPS for the most part. Something that I can unplug my brain and play. If it has a cool plot and fun adventures, great, but not mandatory. Halo and Ghost Recon were my faves on the Xbox.

Unfortunately, I think this new addiction is going to get expensive. After I started playing this, I got to thinking "Hmmm....maybe I should get another card and use their SLI feature to run them together." You know for that absolutely insane overkill. However, I only have ONE fucking PCI Express slot. Soooooooooo...........now I'm digging around New Egg, thinking of building a killer machine.

I blame this all on RC helicopters. If I didn't like them so much, I wouldn't have bought the flight sim, which would not have led to the graphics card upgarde, which then led to Fallout 3, and a potential PC gaming addiction.

Fucking helicopters.

Mike, whats your motherboard?

or you can just wait for GTX295 to be launched this January. OverclockersClub already got it and doing some benchies. here's preview of what this card can do for ya: source

knowing nvidia i would expect mid-high $xxx price tag at launch

sorry for poisoning you ;)

Runs fine here. First game I played in 5 years. Very addictive.

TFC '99 and Counterstrike 1.6 or CZ are the greatest fucking games ever made. No eye candy or anything, just solid, addicting game play that never EVER gets old. I actually feel bad for recommending them because you'll probably never get any work done.
