Best domain registrar?

I know everyone hates godaddy, but they have been very good to work with for me. My recent experiences with their support have been excellent, fast response, knowledgable and very helpful. Even at 4am

I do agree though that buying anything from them is a pain with all the upsells plus they sell a bunch of stuff that can be gotten for free other places. Oh and I HATE that stupid music they have on hold. It also seems that my domains sometimes get re-set to auto renew when I know I had them set not to. That pissed me off a few times, but they always promptly refunded my money and have been very good about refunds on other stuff too.

Someone told me it is not a good idea to host your domains at the same place you register them. I am wondering why that is.

Cuz if your host screws you, you can't easily switch hosts by simply changing your domain's nameserver/IP.

+ most sites will require an upgrade in hosting (from shared to VPS to dedi's)

But you may never need to change registrars (if you picked a good one like NameCheap from the start).

I highly recommend NC as a registrar but I would never recommend anyone host with them.

Well I like Godaddy never had any sort of problems there, I wouldnt since I dont own 100's of domains just a one or two here and there :D

I prefer Namecheap - I have not had any problems with them. Plus their interface is user friendly. Give them another try if this is not a consistent problem. I have also used Dynadot without any problems.

I own 75 plus domains at any one given time. Godaddy is the best by far ... period.. and there are deep discounts for bulk .....

GoDaddy and Name.com are the worst registrars I've used. Namecheap has just about been alright, but for me Moniker is the shit. <3 Moniker.

I'd have to say Dynadot as well! Amazing and simple without the hype. Doesn't send out a gazillion of mails and pretty fast as well!

I have most of my domains @ name.com, some infos on godaddy, < 10 domains at 1and1, few ones at moniker, netfirms and namecheap

name.com has been excellent, good pricing, free whois ( so far )
godaddy control panel and cart upsells suck
1and1 has been horrible during the last 2 registrations, one of which failed and after several days I registered the domain somewhere else, they were facing 'technical problems', the other one took several days and required me to call them because I had changed nameservers too early and the registration had failed.... WTF, if you let me do it via the control panel I suppose I can do it.

I'd like to find a registrar with good prices and free whois
