I back my sites up using 'Generate Full Website Backup' in CPanel, as well as the Partial backups, including databases. But I typically just dump these .tar files onto an external hard drive and leave it as that.
Sometimes you hear about backups being corrupted etc. While I've never had to restore a backup, is there any way of checking to ensure that all files and db were downloaded properly? Sometimes I compare the size of the new downloads to previous downloads, but not always....
