Pretty interesting read...
Google Algorithm Changes For April: Big List Released | WebProNews

a few I took particular interest in:
Smoother ranking changes for fresh results. [launch codename "sep", project codename "Freshness"] We want to help you find the freshest results, particularly for searches with important new web content, such as breaking news topics. We try to promote content that appears to be fresh. This change applies a more granular classifier, leading to more nuanced changes in ranking based on freshness.
No freshness boost for low-quality content. [launch codename “NoRot”, project codename “Freshness”] We have modified a classifier we use to promote fresh content to exclude fresh content identified as particularly low-quality.

@masterjani thanks for the share. I found this extremely useful on the microsite master page.
...After all, how can a “citation” or “recommendation” (which is how the concept of link “valuation” first came to be) be valid if the citation or link has absolutely nothing to do with the page or site that it is on?

Looks like they did a lot of work, but unfortunately the quality of search results decreased as a result. Google failed big time

Google, in its bid to seek "revenge" from link builders for gaming its search results, has ended up hurting itself much more.

As the quality of search results is an indication of the performance of Google engineers, they have failed big time with these recent updates.

Unrelated to gaming serps like the above example, what about this instance:
A search for carburetor parts returns a whole mess of results for carbohydrates. Probably because of the shortened "carbs"

I haven't come across any other niches like this, but it is something they need to address for their user experience agenda.
