How many people do you think would actually drop $1500 to unlock their family photos and facebook passwords though? Like .0001%
The only people who have files worth that much are people who probably already run backups anyway. If I were these guys I would've charged like $25, then everyone would've just given in and paid it; even if you have a backup it's easier to just drop 25 bucks and be done with it.

Yes. If you stop projecting your own reality onto others then it's not that hard to see some people would go crazy if they lost all their pictures of little timmy growing up.
Ransomware Shits
My wife got hit with this on her work computer and she was trying to tell me how she had to pay the FBI for looking at the wrong files online.
As it was her work laptop i can see how this scam could work (unless someone has a different PC to look up what to do it can be pretty intimidating). I shut it down pretty easily and that was the last we heard of it.

I would assume that any business where employees spend the majority of their time on the computer would have numerous offsite backups.
Or maybe I'm the only one here paranoid enough to still do that. Who knows.
I still figure if they charged something reasonable, almost everyone would just suck it up and pay it and their overall margin would be much higher. Hell, even if it were a brand new computer with 2 files on it, I'd pay 25 to get it unencrypted just to save myself a few minutes.
