If you are a black woman with an advanced degree, there's a good chance you've never been married.

New research from Yale University suggests that highly educated black women are twice as likely to have never been married by the age of 45 as white women with similar education.

Hannah Bruckner, who leads the Center for Research on Inequalities and the Life Course at Yale University, says the disparity can be partly explained by a difference in dating preferences between some black men and women.

"Black men are more likely to marry outside of their race, and black women are more likely to marry outside of their education," she says.

Bruckner says that is compounded by tough competition for a smaller pool of highly educated black men.

Finding 'Mr. Right'

Kimberly Hill, 37, agrees that the market is slim. But Hill, who has a master's degree and heads up a political consulting firm in Detroit, says black women may need to redefine their ideal partner.

"I believe there are a lot of prospects," Hill says. "Perhaps we need to change what we're looking for."

Hill says she is searching for a man with more than a degree. "I'm not only looking for someone who has attained a great level of achievement, but also someone who is spiritually grounded."

Niambi Carter, 31, has a Ph.D. and is an assistant professor of political science at Purdue University, admits that she has been hard-pressed to find a black mate with a similar level of education.

But she says it may be just as hard to find an interested man who is not black.

"Black women are not seen as marriageable by those outside of their race," she says. "We are not seen as adding status."

Carter says a persistent double standard adds to the challenge: Women are penalized for waiting to get married, while men are rewarded for their patience.

"Men tend to become 'distinguished' as they get older," Carter says. "Women just get old."

A Question Of Priorities?

Both Hill and Carter agree that finding a compatible partner is only part of the problem. They argue that black women are often encouraged to choose advanced education, but sometimes at the expense of personal relationships.

Carter recalls that when she decided to go to graduate school at age 21, marriage was not on her horizon.

"I thought either you do school or you do marriage ... but never thought of them as being able to co-exist," she says.

Hill takes it a step further. She points to a sense of obligation felt by many black women to break socioeconomic barriers that have hindered their predecessors. That pursuit, she says, can overshadow other goals.

"We may have become distracted," Hill says.

The wage gap between never marrieds (men and women) doesn't exist. The wage gap comes into play when people marry, as women assume a larger portion of the household chores (typically) and may engage in pregnancy and child rearing. This sets back their career curve. It's no big secret.

The feminists and cultural leftists however love to blame it all on evil white men, but the statistics dont bear out that case.

Many men and women who advance far have no family, smaller families or no children at all.

That's part of it; the statistics still show a 21% gap when controlling for factors like that.

"So, how can the other 21% be explained? Simply, not all factors that could possibly affect wage disparity are measurable. Moreover, it is virtually impossible to come up with every factor that could possibly affect wages (GAO, 19-20). One factor rarely mentioned but that has been found by the Council of Economic Advisers to contribute to wage disparities is labor unions. Union membership boosts wages of union members relative to non-union members by 10 to 20 percent and, traditionally, many more men have been members of unions than women (CEA, 7). Certainly, other factors like this may exist that have yet to be studied and tested. Then, of course, there is one other possibility, flat out discrimination ("just because you are a woman I will pay you less"). However, measuring that possibility by examining statistical aggregates either nationally or in a particular state is complicated because of the number of variables involved."

I think you need to re-read the report. They aren't controlling for marriage when they talk about the 21% gap. Child bearing is mentioned further up in the report, but I was primarily talking about marriage.

Marriage is where the split comes, as women assume more of the domestic workload, while men continue increasing their workplace productivity.

Why do these women think that getting a higher education is going to make them more attractive to men? The only thing men care about is looks. I don't give a flying fvck where you went to school or that you have a PHD. Only women care about those things.

And if these black women want to make themselves more attractive, they need to stop acting like black women who are owed something by non-blacks because they are women and black. Try acting like a lady which means drop the attitude, the ghetto slang, and everything else that makes you ugly in the eyes of men everywhere.

Maybe then you'll get a man.

@fiver
people actually get education for reasons other than attracting a mate, as amazing and unbelieavable as that might sound to a intelectual giant like yourself.

@ the OP,

I see no BOOBIES. I clickied the thread for successful black boobies, not political/feminist BS.

I SAY SHOW ME THE BOOBIES!

...Spoken like the broke, unread and powerless. If you knew any high net worth individuals you would know that these kind of men know that with marriage comes signing over of property rights. In other words, ceteris paribus, wealthy men from a certain background want women who will make them richer (read play a traditional social role that can enhance their position in society; be emotionally supportive so things are taken care of at home while they work long hours.....etc etc).

That being said, I do think the extreme far left feminist agenda does women more harm than good these days....

You won't be hosting any board members at your house so obviously it's not important to you if your woman's wit and intellect can wow potential investors or win over an old taciturn chairman whose vote you need next quarter...

"without adjusting for factors that affect wages, women earned 44% less than men during the period of the 1983-2000 (GAO, 44). However, once those factors were incorporated into the equation, the gap dropped to 21%. Among the significant factors were work patterns, choice of industry, choice of occupation, race, marital status, and job tenure."

Why the fuck do all of your posts always include something about "knowing high net worth individuals" ?

I respect women who have ambitions and are successful. But at the end of the day, I'm only attracted to her if she's feminine. Also young and hot. If she's young, hot, and feminine, then those ambitions make me like her even more because there's more depth to her. But that doesn't mean she can just drop being a woman because she's successful. Men don't care about a woman's brain if she is not good-looking and feminine. Some western women like to bitch about that being shallow, but I don't care. I side with nature, not 20th century Western social conditioning.
