Blackberry Classic

You think they're just going after the older business demographic? It's an interesting business move on their end.

From marketing/targeting with ads I find older business people with tech love Apple, especially iPads.

I know nothing about phones or anything though and always just get the free phone upgrade.

Can't wait for Nokia to answer with a 'Nokia 3310 Classic'. Seriously, I bet people (hipsters) would buy that.

I actually think this is a genius move by Blackberry. Financial dudes, CEO's, and other big wigs still use classic Blackberry's. Most I know hate iPhones/Android because of the lack of a real keyboard. These are email jockeys and text guys. They delegate shit all day long, that's their job. They could give a fuck about apps as long as they can use it to do their job and check their bank accounts.

Until now Blackberry (or anyone for that matter) didn't have an upgrade path for these users, but now they do. Now, on to profit margins. The people who buy these could give a shit about specs. They just need it to be reliable and fast. So Blackberry stuffs some hardware from 3 years ago into it, tops it with the BBOS 10 and stuffs it into a case designed in 1998 and viola! Seriously I bet these things cost Blackberry less than $100 to manufacture.

Loyal customer base + pent up demand + high profit margin = real money in the bank

If you wouldn't need a good camera, app support and a nice screen to view things then this would be the perfect phone. Kinda looks like my bold 9900.

I am starting to miss the good old buttons more and more lately. Swiping a touchscreen is funky and cool if you are browsing pictures all day, but anything text-related is a pain. This phone makes sense, and I hope there will be more models with proper buttons in the future.

This. I used to love my Blackberry & it's QWERTY keyboard until about 2011 when 'smart'phones took over. And that's kind of where RIM went wrong IMO.. The software/OS is crap. BBM was well ahead of it's time, but whatsapp killed that in an environment where Apple and Android have the marketshare.

I reckon cheshire is right about it being a sound business move, going back to the basics & what you do best. (A lot like Nokia did a few years ago?) Still no idea how RIM is still in business though.. I was under the impression that they were - unsuccessfully - courting buyout offers recently?

I think this is too little too late. While this phone may appeal to those who are typing shit out throughout the entire day, it's probably unlikely that there are enough of those people to make a difference to the success of BB.

The ability to run Android apps sound great, until you find out that you have to download them through the Amazon app store or whatever. But apparently, the square screen resolution fucks up your viewing experience anyway, so you probably shouldn't bother.

BB dropped the ball a long time ago... unlikely they'll be able to pick it up with the direction the market has gone.

Part of me misses being able to take a piss with my right hand and type confidently with my blackberry in my left hand.

But I find I use this about 75% of the time now:

Swiftkey for the other 25% of the time means less backspacing and faster sms on a touchscreen...

At least one company realized that unless you have fingers of a 10 year old, using a touchscreen keyboard is a bit of a PITA...

Looks pretty good.

Lets just say worldwide there are 3 million classic blackberry users that love their phones but want an upgrade. I think that number is conservative worldwide but we'll go with that. Lets also assume that Blackberry only makes $300 per customer on these phones. My bet is they make $350 or so but we'll go with a conservative $300.

3,000,000 x $300 = $900,000,000

Blackberry is easily going to pull another billion dollars in profit out of this not including the government contracts. After working in some BBM and other services to that customer base I bet it gets closer to $2B.

And how is it that RIM hasn't gone out of business by now?

People like keyboards man.

Touchscreens just aren't all that.

I went from a slider to a nexus, and I FUCKING HATE this bullshit.

The touchscreen broke last week too, looks like it was just in time. I will be getting one of these bad motherfuckers shortly.

I hate talking to my phone as well, fuck siri and john fucking malkovich.

This phone looks awesome.

Power to them if they can manage to pull that off - it's always interesting to see an underdog pull through just when you think they're down and out. We all know nothing touches BB when it comes to keyboards, and the Classic does look good, so the potential is definitely there. Guess we'll have to wait til next quarter for some data from their earnings report.
