Blogging now requires a $300 license in Philly

Apart from the free speech implications, its really just another instance of the good guys getting punished for following the (tax) law to the letter while those who ignore the law get rewarded. Not a great long term policy.

This kind of reminds me of those stories about health inspectors and city inspectors shutting down childrens lemonade stands. Not the pity the children part but the ridiculousness of it.

Its one of the most counter productive things a city could do. I cant imagine who must have thought this would be a great idea with no backlashes at all. Discussing technology with them would probably be like a really bad episode of kids say the darndest things.

I don't think the city-level has that kind of jurisdiction.

Im not talking about like a federal levy, Im talking about if the city sues you for not paying and they put a judgement on your account.

Maybe things have changed and Im not aware, but Im pretty sure if you lose a judgement and the person/city suing you has a nasty enough lawyer, they can seize your bank account or get the funds you owe out of it. If you dont have the funds available then your SOL.

Edit:

Just did some reading. If the city were to sue you and won, they could then garnish your wages. Unless theres a law that a city cant sue an individual or company. I dont think there is.

So, if you didnt pay they would either just take it from your account after you lost the lawsuit, or if you didnt have enough money in your account to pay it, your account would be frozen until you deposited enough to pay it.

^ No judge would allow this unless he is a complete dick. Your wages being garnished is one thing but freezing everything so you can't pay your rent, food, etc. isn't going to happen. Worst case is they garnish like 25% of your wages coming in.

Inb4:

This $300 fee infringes upon my 1st Amendment rights.....

(not really since it is a business thing and related to revenue... but still i could see people going this route to fight this law)

No, the point is not all blogging is for business.

That argument could only be won if they could prove the blog was a non profit thing (not sure how to go about registering that off the top of my head either), or if they didnt have advertising of their own on it.

The reason these people got a bill from the city was because they reported their income with their taxes. I dont know why they would, you dont have to report any income under $600 from something, I guess they were just being patriotic or something. Either way, it cost them.

Yeah I gotta agree with the free speech thing, they wiil defo have to put in place and differentiate from those who are building blogs for profit and those who are not.

But yeah, come to think of it the $300 dollar license really is fucked in a way because as mentioned $300 is a whole paycheck for some peepz.

this gave me an idea:

Create an CMS that looks and works just like a WordPress blog, but name it Funk Philly CMS.

Then target philly for premium themes and plug ins.

Bloggers, get off your blogs, and start CMS'ing to save $300/year.

they aint charging bloggers. they are charging people earning money from their blogs. solution is simple. you don't need to earn money off your blog, dont. you do, take the money somewhere else.

somehow im pretty sure this is obama's fault. popeye will probably fill in the details glen beck style

Sorry your little mind can't wrap itself around a simple fact. The leftist, big government socialist (including BO) are running this country into the fucking ground.

What do they do instead of trying to make policy that will kickstart small business? THEY TAX

It's the left's answer to EVERYTHING. It has NEVER....I repeat NEVER worked before in any country at any time, yet these idiots mostly from acadamia that have NEVER ran a business keep on trying this tired, proven wrong strategy.

How is it BOs fault you ask. He has set the climate for tax and spend. He has crammed his cabinet full of harvard profesors that have spent their whole life in a classroom flapping thier ignorant mouths at kids.

Pull yourself away from WF and Huffpost and read something outside of your comfort zone. Read some books on economics..maybe take a freshman level eco class and realize their is more options than what the socialist offer.

lol... there it is folks! haha... It's Obama's fault. Not the city government that has been running Philly for the past 60+ years.

Popeye never fails.

If I create a blogspot blog and I live in philly, do I automatically owe the gov't $300 USD?

That's fucked up.

Aren't rules like this meant to walk around instead of following? Honestly, seems like everyone would quit pissing in their bathroom if there was an ordinance against it. Making money is like playing chess, if you can't be logical about it, then why even try?
