Bluehost and Hostgator Down All Morning

Is it weird when hosts don't host their own sites, or is that standard practice? I've seen a few hosts advertise that they host their own homepages as a selling point.

They use dynect dns, so when their data center went out their domains just rerouted to a backup location. Most big hosts do something like this to ensure they can still provide support/news to users through their site during maintenance periods.

Cloudflare saved me from having any downtime during this issue, though I don't host any of my money sites with HG anyways.

It helps make up for all the times cloudflare has been the cause of my downtime....

364/365 days of the year their hosting works just as intended, no complaints

but then it goes down one day and suddenly "I AIN'T HAD NUTHIN' BUT PROBLEMS WITH HG SINCE THE BEGINNING, WORST HOSTING I EVER HAD, I'M MOVING ASAP"

Well, alrighty then.

Personally I've been with HG since my WF join date and can only remember maybe one or two other instances that my sites weren't loading, and it was only for like 10 or 20 minutes. But you know, they're the worst hosting company ever, and every other hosting company never has any problems ever.

^^^ Especially since this was outside of HG's direct control to begin with - it was a datacenter issue.

It could have all been Google's fault. Didn't Provo just switch over to Google Fiber?

Have all my Local clients on Cloudfare for this reason because back in the day they used to call ME when their sites were down lol Anyways, they're all brick and mortar so they didn't even notice the cached version today, thank God. Now they only call me when they lock themselves out of Facebook or when they accidentally erase their entire site. #babysitting

But it was in HG's direct control because the issue is at HG's New Datacenter that THEY own (EIG that is).
And I've been a HG devotee for years. But they recently got bought out by EIG and many have complained of nothing but shit since. Personally I haven't had too much probs yet cause I'm still using Softlayer's datacenter.. which is what HG used before the buyout. Well now they're forcing everyone to move over to their shitty HG datacenter and everyone hates it.

I'm actually in the process of migrating from the softlayer DS to the HG one lol.. and this shit happens. But luckily haven't changed info at registrar yet.. but everyone needs to be off softlayer DS by Aug 7th.

I'm lazy, but they may force me to look at other options.

I'm not impressed with Host Gator lately. It seems like they've moved everyone to shitty servers; my web site's response time suffered, and I get downtime notices from Pingdom on a regular basis.

Today it reported over 3 hours of downtime! wtf is going on.

They used to be rock solid back when Brent was in charge - I had zero complaints and I was with them for 5+ years.

^This. Getting bought out means new management with new ways of doing things.

Obviously they have always been known to have great service, but now the new owners seem to be relying on past reputation and not necessarily continuing to build on what they were known for. This isn't the first time I've heard complaints in the last year (coming from hearing nothing but glowing reviews previously). Great move for short term profits, but not necessarily a good long-term strategy.

I'll be moving my 4 hosting plans with them somewhere else.
