Boardwalk Empire.. prepare yourself

It was originally a book titled Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City written by Nelson Johnson. The adaptation was done by writer/producer from Sopranos, Terence Winter.

Should be a winner...off to set the DVR.

Just finished it, about what I expected from a Scorsese directed show/film. Looks to be a good show.

It was good... not sure what the guy who said it was too slow was expecting, just non-stop violence? You have to build up the characters a bit in the first few episodes. There was a bunch of violence throughout the show anyway.

It was also cool to see the different famous mobsters, seemingly before they become household names (Capone, Luciano). It will be interesting to see how these guys evolve, especially Capone. I didn't realize he would be such a major character (and still not sure he will be). I think they just didn't want to sell it as a series/show about Al Capone, but more so Prohibition-era Atlantic City in general, and more specifically Nucky Thompson.

Not to mention the production value- the scenes were gorgeous in HD.

I'm the one who said I thought it was a bit slow. Not slow in the general sense, where it drags on and you get bored... but slow as in I watched it for 1 hour and 15 minutes and I seriously thought I had been watching for 3 hours.

ps - I've seen a lot of people online today say they were glad it was "so realistic and historically accurate". I'm not sure why they are thinking that... half the characters are totally made up.

Crap, I will never buy another domain after drinking. No wonder I was surprised yesterday when all tlds were available... Good thing I didn't get too greedy and bough only broadwalkempire.com... :-)

I loved what happened to the wife beater at the end.. I can already see the inevitable outcome of their new relationship (shown in the previews of next episode).. She finds out he's a crook/bringing in alcohol + he had her husband killed, then all hell breaks loose and he murders her. (though if this show is based on fact, I guess one of you could tell me if I'm wrong or not :P)

Buschemi is classic. It's a great role for him and I thought they did a good job setting it up as well. Can't wait to see more.

Between Boardwalk Empire and House, last night was T.V. fun for the whole family.

It was alright I guess. Lots of rehashed scenes from The Departed.

Sopranos really gave what seemed to be a realistic look into the evolution of the modern day mobsters. Over time they changed, ditched cell phones as the FBI got smarter, shit like that. Evolution is hard in shows placed back in time.

Also, I don't think Steve Buscemi really fills out the roll of a kingpin/boss/guy in charge. Every roll he's ever done he's played the retard side character (Con Air, Reservoir Dogs, Armageddon, etc). Plus he weighs like 170 pounds soaking wet? Hard to believe somebody doesn't just beat the shit out of him and take over his boardwalk action.

Still too early to tell but given how fast HBO shitcans shows that don't perform, I'll give it 2 seasons max.

Found this on another review for you...

"People need to get it in their heads that Nucky Thompson isn’t supposed to be this rough and tumble character. He’s a gangster/politician who’s figuring out how to do both. He’s NOT Tony Soprano."

Also..

Only two days after the drama’s debut, HBO announced that it has renewed Boardwalk Empire. The series’ Sept. 19 start averaged 4.8 million viewers – HBO’s largest premiere of any program in more than six years (since the March 21, 2004 introduction of Deadwood).

I find this really interesting:

Reviews on the first episode of Boardwalk Empire were generally positive, though many people - such as Ken Tucker at Entertainment Weekly - mentioned that the pilot episode, which Scorsese directed, is the weakest of the early episodes. And considering the episode was so entertaining, I can’t even imagine how good this series can get.
