Burqa Ban in France

With all due respect, it's not so much the burqa that the French government is against, it's what it represents.

Wearing Burqa is confirming oppression and sexism, it means, males can tell females what to do and what to wear and there's nothing they can do about it. By banning burqa's they're banning any possibility of "oppression".

Ever wonder why muslims women wear black? black = obedience. In Islam a woman can't even raise her voice against the husband and domestic violence is legal. Banning burqa is banning this stupidity.

I live in a Moderate islamic country and even here we give people that wear burqa's the "wtf" look. (arab's, etc).

If it were up to me I would just ban Islam. and ultimately ban the idea of God itself.

Ok, well Allah has told me that you're due for a good stoning. And not the smiling, laughing kind.

Please turn yourself into your nearest religious policeman. Thank you.

The visibility of the face in the public sphere has always been a public safety requirement. It was so obvious that until now it did not need to be enshrined in law. But the increase in women wearing the niqab, like that of the ski mask favored by criminals, changes that. We must therefore adjust our law, without waiting for the phenomenon to spread. …

In both France and the United States, we recognize that individual liberties cannot exist without individual responsibilities. This acknowledgment is the basis of all our political rights. We are free as long as we are responsible individuals who can be held accountable for our actions before our peers. But the niqab and burqa represent a refusal to exist as a person in the eyes of others. The person who wears one is no longer identifiable; she is a shadow among others, lacking individuality, avoiding responsibility.

This French law made me think in another direction: as technology progresses, I believe that we'll have to cover our faces in order to defeat facial recognition algorithms more frequently. Would this law make it illegal to wear a bandana over the lower half of your face, or a mask in public? (as you would to a demonstration/protest)

Where in the Quran does it say women should be subjected to this? Nowhere! This bullshit was created by fundamentalist psychos(men), who use this as another reason to oppress women and keep them locked down. Religion as a whole is as sickening to me as a bout with the Norwalk virus.

Yes.

True that, my theory is, when Prophet Muhammed (50+ y/o) married Aiesha (6 y/o), he made Burqa compulsory to hide her real age. It would've ruined his holy rep if his followers saw him doing the giggity to a child. He also married an elderly women(40+, reason was for power and money) when he was 20-ish so who knows, self-esteem issues coz he had a woman too old and ugly?

Scratch that, maybe it's just a cultural thing.

Do you really need statistics? The inability to identify an individual without a retinal scan or thumb print, or to even identify gender without tugging on their genitals is a pretty fucking huge security risk dipshit.

Yeah and having pockets is a security risk too, right?

When the US sees a rash of burqa-wearing bandits committing crimes, you'll manage to change my mind.

Until then, go read more 1984.

It's France's country so the people should act as France want not how their faiths should be considered, fuck off home if you don't like it.

Agreed. The French should be able to determine what's acceptable in their society, not have a bunch of "guests" determine it for them.

If I had my way, everyone would have to dress like this:

France essentially is trying to protect the freedom of women by taking away a freedom.

There are only a few thousand women wearing the Niqab/Burqa in France.

Part of the law is a penalty/prison time for anyone forcing a woman to wear the Niqab. That's great - the true oppression is the enemy, not the women who choose of their own free will to dress conservatively according to their values/traditions.

The security concerns don't make much sense to me. I was watching France 24 and a member of parliament was playing it up as a security issue. As if there aren't plenty of other types of clothing that can conceal a weapon/bomb. The French are required to show their faces when asked to do so by police.

I've done alot of traveling through the Gulf states, Jordan, etc. I've never seen any of the traditional dress being an issue at airports, etc. It also says something when in many of these countries (granted, not all) you see women dressing across the whole spectrum - women wearing the Niqab next to a women in a short skirt and a tank top. Women dressed very liberally are tolerated in Amman - but a very conservatively dressed woman is not tolerated in Paris? This does not add up.

I agree with the ban. Have you ever been standing next to a group of women (or men, I didn't recognise) with niqab? It is not confidence inspiring you know ...

I wish they banned this dress in the UK.

En ce qui concerne ce sujet... Il n'y a aucune raison pour laquelle "the fucking France" interdire la Bruqa...c'est juste, car ils sont des RacistE.

The veil sucks. But why on earth would any country welcome immigrants from a country where the veil is normal and then tell them after the fact that they can't wear it? If you don't want people from that culture in your country then don't let them immigrate. To let them immigrate then say "Haha, we're making your culture illegal" is bullshit.

You're right, it's pretty damn rude of the French to make stoning illegal. They're really pissing on the Muslims' culture. How dare they!

It's populism. Just because they will be hidden from the public eye, doesn't mean that it solves any problems.

Women that were forced to wear burqas won't be able to wear less concealing clothing now. Instead they won't be able to leave the house anymore, being completely cut off from society now.

Not to mention the negative PR this gets in the Islamic world. It's fuel for Islamic extremists. It's widening the gap instead of bridging it.
