Supreme Court Orders California to Release 30,000+ Prisoners; Scalia Freaks Out: SFist

The Supreme Court today issued what amounts to an injunction against the State of California and its prisons, ordering the state to release 30,000 prisoners from the overcrowded system. The 5-4 majority opinion in the case of Brown v. Plata, No. 09-1233 affirms an earlier order by a three-judge special federal court, made in 2009, requiring the state to reduce its prison population to 110,000, which would be 137% capacity.

In other news, Lindsey Lohan is heard screaming in public: "FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK MY TIMING!!!"

We would have to make extreme cuts to get down to capacity.. but it becomes pretty much impossible once you consider the amount of illegal mexicans we are putting away every year.

Someone needs to dig up some stats. I can't recall the exact figure but illegals make up a large percentage of california prisoners.

But don't trip.. they are well fed courtesy of your hard earned money god bless america

Glad to hear it. The impetus sucks, but the outcome is good. :)

I dun luvs me a good celeb train wreck.

In other news, electricity brownouts were reported across the state. A spokesman for the power company reported that all of a sudden, all of the crack dealers' stoves fired up and they started a'cookin

Prison used to be lucrative business 10 may be 15 years ago but after the budget, prisons become more over crowded and they just have to let prisoners go because the state can't afford it anymore.

Are you implying all prisoners are felons?
*sideways confused look*

The real question this thread raises is, are they going to release the harmless drug possession felons or the murderers and rapists? We probably don't want to know the answer.

QFT.

I heard that Arizona has stopped repairing their border wall to the south and started erecting one just like it to the west... :D

Hard to think all these ex-prisoners will find any kind of work, will this push CA unemployment past the present %12 really %20 if counted as in the Clinton era?

Silly, if we stopped fighting the war on personal freedoms, this wouldn't be an issue.
