I did a search for greyhat and couldn't really find anything, besides it's a combination of WH and BH.

Regarding BH: cloaking software, can this still work? and don't know if I could get into legal trouble so that would be a reason to keep from trying it. Is this something that could work on smaller search engines?

I would normally define Grayhat as:

"Not clearly defined in Webmaster Guidelines & can therefore be abused until it is"

Good example of this is paid links. We all know that Google doesn't like it, but people still do it.

The people who do it badly will get burned, the people who do it properly will make it look totally natural.

You won't get in any legal trouble whatsoever. Google's TOS is by NO MEANS the law. It's just their TOS, so they could ban your site. That's the most that could happen to you.

They haven't taken over the world yet. :xomunch:
