Hello gay webmasters!

I hear from so many people that chinese is worth learning.

What do you think?

Pros:

-China's economy is booming

-More than 1 billion people speak it

Cons:

-Hard to learn , especially to write

-Takes at least 3 years to be good at it

I have actually been learning chinese for quite some time and I would say that you are right on the money with some of the cons you talk about. Writing is difficult because there is no alphabet and there are 4 tones which are quite hard to get the grasp of. Normally it would take about 3 years to learn, however if you are really hardworking you can apply to an intensive course such as China pod intensive learning, I have known some people to speak it well in two after that.

Waste of time, unless you want to live in a country where mandarin/cantonese is spoken.

Major wast of time... China is poised to become the Worlds largest English speaking country within a few years. Thanks to the Olympics being held there, speaking English is now considered a premium skill.

Google - "china to become largest English speaking country".

yeah keep thinking that way..less competition for the rest of us. :thefinger:

I spent 1 year in China, and I was able to speak basic Chinese by the end of the year. (Basic meaning: getting to know people, asking about their work/school, asking for directions, asking about food/drinks in restaurants, etc...)

Learning to speak Mandarin is easier than most people think. They don't have tenses and their phrase structure is easy: subject verb complement. They don't have 5 words that mean the same thing like in English. They pretty much always use the same verbs/nouns.

Now learning to write/read is the true challenge. Over 2000 characters to learn... that's fucked up. Stick to PinYin (Chinese written in English alphabet) as a start...

I highly recommend the Rosetta Stone software to anyone that wants to learn any language. It's simply the best learning software ever made!

Not sure if serious. Or maybe you missed a word "hundreds", like few hundred years. That might happen, sadly we won't witness it.

Fun fact: There is no such thing as a language called "Chinese"
Haha yeah, this.

I'm learning Mandarin, but mostly just for the mental exercise over any practical application.

Also if you're not ready to spend 3 years before becoming fluent in any language, then you might as well not even start because you'll fail unless you speak French/learn Spanish or another set of very similar languages like that.

Been learning chineese(mandarine) for 3-4months. Cause of bigger and bigger influence on China, some economits saying that in 15-20 years China will be the center of worlds(economy,money,etc...)

The problem is this language is super difficult - speaking - it's kind of tonal language - and music/tones is my weakness. People leaving in different areas of China sometimes don't understand each other - they speaking the same language - chinese(mandarine) but different dialects)))) so these are the people who were born and raised in China - imagine how it's for people from other countries...

Chinese will be deffinetely important in future, but not in near - it's good idea for the kids though... since when you are a kid you can learn language much easier.

fun fact: your wrong. zhongwen中文 means Chinese language.
I'd say it translates to Western Culture as Chinese) but it's means

[zhong]=middle/center
[wen]=speech

cause for Chinese . China is CENTER kindom, they kind believe that they live in center and all other countries around(like sun)

so the beauty of mandarin(chinese) - it's kind of language of symbols.

for example subway = iron+earth

that's what i remeber from what i've learnt 2years ago...
