Computer Upgrade Advices ?

Maybe im wrong, but really i dont think upgrading the video card should be a priority... I work first then play, and as i said i can run all the current games, and will surely be able to play starcraft 2 without any issues, maybe not extreme full quality, but it should be decent.

My video card is not that bad, I think the other components in my computer should be changed first... here are benchmarks of my video card : PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmarks - Video Card Look Up

If i overclock my graphic card i can probably get a 10fps increase in most games.

Hmmm ya it is pretty good. I went ATI a while back and havent really checked out the specs on the Geforce line for a while.

Umm your stuck. It doesnt look like there is a real great $300 - 400 upgrade.

going i7 will make you get DDR3.

Could just do RAM but your next upgrade will probably be to DDR3 making DDR2 you buy now worseless.

Anyone do a ATI Phenom II upgrade? Worth it?

For that you would need MB / CPU and probably ram but DDR2 stuff.

Or if you could get a e7300 or e8400 or Quad cheap and drop it in.

Could just clean your Hard Drive or reinstall windows. That might make a difference and not cost anything but time backing up and down time.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 use RAM more like Linux than Windows XP. If there is memory free, something should get cached to it. It that memory is then needed for something else it is cleared. Many don't understand this when they first get Vista and complain about it using most of their RAM.

I said win7 uses less RAM than vista (I had it before win7) for doing the daily stuff I do (mail, IM clients, IDEs, multiple browsers open, 30 active tabs etc). It displayed warning messages on vista about RAM running out. So win7 uses it more efficiently than vista.

The extra resources used for the juggling of cached stuff into free RAM was the reason I disabled superfetch on both.

It wasnt easy but I did A LOT of shopping ( in montreal ) to find these parts:

· 1. Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive $81+ taxes.

· 2. Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 DDR2-800 CL4 $69 + taxes.

· 3. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80569Q9550 $249 + taxes.

· 4. ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler Rev.2 $35 + taxes.

Total (taxes included) = ~500$ (50$ above my max budget) BTW this is CAD$

Those are the best prices I could find...
It is cheaper for me to buy these parts at this price locally than to order them online because of shipping/handling fees ( i checked tons of stores online, the prices are better but when it gets to the shipping/handling, cost is always equal or over what i'd pay locally ).

So now I need to reduce costs...

First thing I could cut is the Artic Cooling Fan... that means I could still overclock the Q9550 but the results wouldnt be as good.

Instead of getting the Q9550 I could get the Q9400, it sells for 210$ around here.

Or Instead of a Quad Core, Another option is to buy a E8400 /or E8200 ( 3.0Ghz /or 2.66Ghz 6mb L2 cache, 1333mhz fsb ) , which sells for 185$ /or 137$ around here, I could overclock it aswell.

But if i go with a C2D, then im not sure if it is worth it to get the E8400/8200, I might aswell stay with the current cpu I have ?
Maybe I dont need the Q9550 ... what if i try to overclock my current E6400 ( 2.13Ghz 2mb L2 Cache 1066mhz fsb ) to around 3.0ghz, maybe i can reach that with stock cooling ? ... if i need to i can still buy that 35$ Arctic Cooling fan, and that should be enough for me to reach 3.0Ghz at least... no ? I know there is a "luck" variable in this thought... and I know it wont be a Quad core... but would this be enough to make my computer last until i buy a completely new system ( in about 1.5 or 2 years )

If I save on the cpu I could upgrade the WD hard drive to a 750gb or 1tb model... The 1tb WD Caviar Black is 105$

So these are my options right now... What would you guys do ?

Thanks for the help!

I like the drive. Have an AAKS myself and get 73 - 74 mb/s.

Quad is a bit expensive. Getting into i7 or i5 money almost.

What does a e7500 cost where you are? It would gain you 45nm chip and overclocks well. Runs cool. Just gives up some FSB and cache which I dont think your board can use. Sometimes much cheaper than e8000 series.

Memory seems ok but I havent run that.

Cooler no opinion.

Good Luck.

^^^^This.

If you are going to get a new system in a year or two, you would do much better money wise to wait on a quad core. (Technology is one of the few things that actually come down price over time.)

Drake is right about the Q series still being in the I7 price range. So If you are going get a new system later I think you would do better to wait and then get an I7 system.

Or, wait another month or two to upgrade and save a little more money. This would give you more time do some research and prices will most likely be even better after the first of next year.

Here's another article that echos my thoughts on Quad vs. Dual core. Quad Core Vs. Dual Core I suggested the Quad Core initially because because of your statement, "I do A LOT of multitasking, work in photoshop mostly" that you made in your first post.

The $105.00 on the 1TB HD you found locally is pretty good though and you might want to pick that up so that you have more storage right now.

To sum it up, with your available budget, the extra and faster ram combined with a better cooling fan and over-clocking your present dual core CPU should gain you a noticeable speed increase in your system.

The 1TB HD with a fresh OS install, you said you will be getting Win7 next month, will also give you better performance.

A couple of simple things to help keep your system running quicker.

1.) Be sure to empty your temp folder at least twice a week if you do a lot of multi-tasking. Besides hogging up space on the HD and memory, those files can cause other problems over time.

2.) Get something like CCleaner (It's free) and run it at least once a week on your Registry and I'd say once a month for your System Apps. (Run the registry cleaner at least twice in succession to be sure that everything is fixed. A lot of times there will still be a couple of entries left related to what was deleted after the first run.)

Be SURE to use the registry backup feature when you run the Registry Cleaner, just as a precaution. (I backup my registry once a week. Converting back to a recent registry backup is one of the easiest and less time consuming ways to get your system running good again if something weird happens. I'm not a big fan of System Restore and based it's past and present performance I most likely never will be.)

I also recommend running the Registry cleaner after any system updates you've installed from MS. Do it after a re-boot, whether update needed one or not. This way the new registry entries will be in memory for the cleaner to analyze.

To give you an idea of whether your system will hold you over for a year or two after your upgrades, here's a screen shot of the box that I am typing this on right now.

OldBox.jpg

This is one of my seed boxes and it still has CS3 Master suite full install, with Office Enterprise 2003 full install on it, and as you can see in the diagram it running the OEM release of Win7. (I'm not a computer gamer though.)

This thing only has 32mb of ram on the video card so the Areo isn't running.

So, if this dinosaur can still run these programs I would think that your upgrade will do you just fine until you get a new system.

I wish you well.

I would ditch the Q9500 and get a Q6600 or Q6700 and OC it to like 3.4Ghz.

You could drop below your max budget by taking advantage of one of the deals below with free shipping on a Q6700 bundle :
