Could You Give Up Your Car?

I don't think I could, I drive everywhere. I always joke that if I was going over to my neighbors I would drive there.

I usually enjoy driving, just not in busy cities such as NYC. I live in a city that barely has any rush hour traffic.

I collect cars / motorcycles.. But I also live out in the sticks and getting ready to move even further out in the sticks.. Far enough out that grocery shopping will be a once a month thing..

Fuck cars if you live in a city with good public transportation.

Ride bikes everyday.

Some cities have car sharing programs. Where you buy into monthly continuity and then pay per km when you borrow it. You can check out times online, and just book it. Usually there are plenty of convenient locations in the city where you can pick it up.

Haven't needed a car since I live right in the middle of Downtown Vancouver, pretty much everything walking distance. But thinking of buying a car in Feb or March for the hell of it.

From what I've read, in the US, car sharing has become extremely popular. With programs like Zipcar people don't have to be car owners in order to enjoy the benefits of driving a car.

It looks like it's a money-saver if you don't need a car very often. However, the more you drive, the more it costs you.

I have 3 close friends that still don't have their damn drivers licenses, they're all 25 years old. I've always gotta pick them up or drop them off if we're trying to get together, bloody nuisances they are!

No. Living simply is fine, but I'm in business to make money so that I can live comfortably and efficiently. I'm not going to ride my bike through ice and snow for groceries, nor will I spend more than an hour on the bus just to get somewhere.

Also, bumming rides constantly is leeching and it's pathetic.

If you've ever used public transportation in LA then you understand why there are so many fucking cars on the road out here.

I agree about bumming and leeching off people. That ain't cool no matter how you cut it. The reason I've been considering the purge is because the people who have done it seem to be really happy about it. Partly because of the money saved (always nice, no matter how many millions you have), and partly because of the simplicity.

Leo's post drives that point home for me. I like simple things. Of course, it helps that my area doesn't receive a lot of rain or snow.

I was talking to a couple buddies about this over the weekend. One is in his 50s with a wife and two grown kids. He wants to sell his house and cars, and buy a loft in downtown San Diego. He said almost everything is within walking distance, including Petco Park.

My other friend is in his 60s. Runs a large business, and has accumulated a lot of stuff (houses, huge ranch, vineyard, etc.). Wants to sell it all, and buy a loft in downtown L.A. Told me, "Man, taking care of all this crap takes a lot out of you."

I could definitely do it, I have a grocery store, gym and bars within 1 mile of my home. Taxi's are readily available and an airport is nearby.
