Article: Robert Greene on his 48 laws of power: 'I'm not evil
Excerpt from above link:
"Even if The 48 Laws of Power can be read as a bastard's handbook, he wrote it to demystify the dirty tricks of the executives he encountered during a dispiriting period as a Hollywood screenwriter. "I felt like a child exposing what the parents are up to and laughing at it," he says. "Opening the curtain and letting people see the Wizard of Oz."
Greene is accustomed to defending his first book, but I suspect he's trying to move beyond it with his latest, Mastery, which studies how talent is developed, using a heavily researched slew of examples including Einstein, Darwin, Goethe and John Coltrane. "I was a little worried that young people would think the only game was being political and manipulative when really the bigger game is being so good at what you do that nobody can argue with your results," he says.
Mastery [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Mastery-Robert-Greene/dp/0670024961"]Mastery[/ame] is an illuminating book but its message (the secret of success is working incredibly hard for many years) is much tougher and more exacting than the follow-your-dreams manuals with which it will share the self-help shelves. "I hate them," he says. "I was under a lot of pressure to write something faster and shorter and easier for people to consume and I resisted that. So maybe this book won't sell because I've loaded the donkey with all that baggage, but I do at least try to debunk the idea that it's all about your parents and education and wealth."

Live Fearless and Prosper!!!
The theory is that someone can come out of nowhere, and within a short period of time rise to the top of the food chain in a social structure and be deemed a guru... wouldn't be the first time...
Their true intention would need to be concealed, except for those within the circle. (Law #3 of 48th Laws of Power)
That person would need to be loud, and controversial in the beginning and do whatever it takes to get noticed. (Law #6 of 48th Laws of Power)
First, he would have to disguise himself as one of them, and whenever something controversial happens, he would wait till the mob start gathering and cry, then become the loudest, and start directing the crowd. Law #28, #35, #39, and #42
The person would have to create a following by becoming friends with other in power and eventually leveraging their names to show he is associated with the others in power - therefore creating an allure around his own persona. But the key is to have the powers at be contact him instead of the other way around. Law #8, #23, #34, and #38
Unfortunately, he cannot rely solely on the efforts of others, he will have to put out his own work and theories to get the attention of the masses to really create a following of his own. His efforts must seem effortless. Law #9, #27, #30, #32.
His existence has to have controversy OR a bit of magic allure. The reputation cannot be perfect and EVERYONE can't like them. It's easier to spread your message when people hate you versus love you. That will have the individual gain popularity rather quickly - especially if influential people start discussing the character amongst their inner circles. But never outshine the masters - Law #1, #5, #6, #24, #28, #31, #41, #43, #44, #46.
The best advise is the character has to be a constant mystery, and cannot be predictable. They have to be like water - formless. - Law #16, #17, #20, #48
That's what I think would be needed to create a WaFo guru. Has it been done perfectly? who knows... maybe. But at the end of the day, it is just a character - might be a fun experiment.
