My day job is a sales position that requires me to find new clients all the time. I immediately thought - why not use my affiliate marketing skills to bring in potential leads or new clients?

Ran it by my firm and they said "Uhh... NO."

Now that doesn't mean that I can't purchase leads from someone else. What I am wondering is how difficult do you think it would be to run my own affiliate program? Essentially buying leads or prospects from affiliate marketers?

Anyone know what the ins and outs would be?

thanks

and as always,

Good luck bros.

Depends what line of work you are in I suppose. If you're a mortgage guy then yes, even in this economy but if you're selling hydraulic brass brackets for aircraft landing gear fetzer valve covers then, no.

I'm sure you've researched what your target market is so if the demo is rather sizable, I would say there is the possibility. Why not throw up a landing page of your own with a contact form and buy some banners on sites specific to your niche?

Just don't do it. You clearly don't have the skills and what it takes to run affiliates.. You are basically admitting here that you don't have much time to dedicated to your network, you have little or no experience owning networks, you have little or no experience owning a BUSINESS let alone... I sure as hell will not choose a network unless they are completely dedicated to their business and clients.. it's just not worth it. Yeah, you may make a little bit of money, but realize this isn't some quick-setup get-rich-quick idea and it requires a LOT more time than you are thinking.

Wow. You make some really harsh assertions about me, without knowing what I do or how I do it. Your response speaks volumes about you, not me.

And as such, go fuck yourself.

It's a tough road to walk man. I used to be a corporate web marketing guy and I built an affiliate program for the company. I skimped on the software because I knew how to run things on the cheap, and went with the barebones MyAP product that Kowabunga had for a while.

Quality control, vetting new leads, making sure your affs aren't out there doing anything to hurt the brand, cutting checks... it's definitely a full time job. And the MyAP software (one of the lowest priced in terms of out of the box, hosted solutions) will run you a minimum of $500 a month, or 20% of commissions, whichever is higher.

If you're going to do all of that, in addition to your job, and deal with the fact that when you leave, no one at the company is going to take it over (leaving angry affiliates) since management said, "No" to begin with, then I suppose you could give it a run.

But keep in mind that your commission checks have to equal 120% of the commissions you pay affiliates just to break even, which looks okay if you assume all leads are good (they aren't). Not to mention that's just the carrying cost, you would also hopefully get a web interface, voicemail, business license, a bank account, some legitimate check-printing software. Getting handwritten checks from your aff manager doesn't exactly instill in you the confidence needed to get out there and test shit.

In closing, I would put this as "last resort" once you've exhausted all other prospecting methods.

Thanks for the reasoned response Sniper. Yeah, after thinking more about it, it does seem like a hassle. Guess I'll just collect the leads myself and set the whole thing up in a friends name.
