Cuba - Any Reviews?

ok, il try to educate a few people here...

First of all... those that said Cuba would be the last thing they would think of as a vacation spot dont know what they are talking about. Too much American propaganda and bs about Cuba has made the island synonymous to Iraq or North Korea. This is simply not true.

Cubans are one of the most well educated and prepared people in Latin America..right there with Argentinians and Uruguayans. They LOVE americans, no , they wont cut off your head, as a dear friend from this forum told me once..lol

Havana is truly a magnificent city, but not because of the usual reasons. Where else can you see, old americans cars from the 50s, 40s and 30s running around together with Ladas and Moscovitch from the 70s and 80s...

You can visit truly historic places that have a lot of shared history with the US. The remains of the Maine ( ship that was blown up by the Spanish, starting the American-Spanish war ) right there laying on the bay.

You can go to La Bijia... Hemmingway's house in Cuba wher ehe lived many years. His boat is still there and the place is kept just as he left it.

Want to see the rests of Che Guevara ( for the historic value of it )....drive to Santa Clara and youll never forget that.

The beaches and Nature in general is breathtaking. Varadero is truly a world class beach. Or for a total unspoiled beach ...drive to Cayo Coco and go to playa Pilar.......
just sky, sand and ocean... nothing else around.

. Regarding safety, Cuba is EXTRA safe for tourists. Nobody has guns in Cuba except the police and a tourist is a sacred cow over there... so you can be sure, nobody would dare to steal a dollar from you.

Only warnings I can think of:

Dont say stupid shit about the government, even if you feel like you should.

If you go for the girls, make sure they are at least 18.

and, DONT DO DRUGS, marihuana smoking or anything worse is the same as killing a child over there. They will jail your american ass faster than you can see it coming. No trial. No nothing.

Other than that, enjoy if you decide to go! Youll never forget it and youll get bragging rights when your friends think you are a crazy mofo because you went to "one of the axis of evil"

forgot to brag about my Cuban cigars collection:

Sweet, fvaldes! Thanks for the Head's up!

-Makes me wish I was into Cigars. I'll still try to get down there for some fun sometime regardless.

Seems like most people that have went recommend it, the ones talking against it have never been there so I know who to trust, will be on my list as the next possible destination...

picture is not representative of the city as whole. Historic parts are pretty amazing. Parts of Montreal look similar to the pic above, but the whole city's not like that.

For an interesting experience consider renting an appartment in Havana.

Just don't expect to bring any Cuban girls there. They have to sign their passport into the log book. Nobody wants to be associated with a Gaijin down there for the rest of their lives.

This... It is a beautiful city with its rough parts like any other city. I felt pretty safe there. I rented an apartment in Havana for $30 a night which was a much better experience than staying in a state owned "luxury" hotel for $200+ a night. PM me if you want a good contact there who can get you an apartment and teach you what you need to know in order to be safe.

Good point about the girls. If a foreigner is even seen with a local girl it'll be assumed that she's a hooker and you may have problems with the cops. Also, don't talk about politics because they can go to jail and you run the same risk or can be deported. I broke this rule and it resulted in some awkward looks and at a restaurant they turned up the music so loud my friend and I couldn't have a conversation with each other.

All in all, great place to visit. Great people, beautiful place, amazing music, awful food (obviously due to socialism only providing certain ingredients).

went there, visited Varadero and Havana. To be honest, it's a beautiful country and people are nice, but it's too "touristy". It's hard to meet locals... good luck meeting local cuban girls who are allowed to go to the same bars or clubs as you. It's definitely not like Thailand. Also, tourists use a different currency than locals. (pesos for locals and pesos convertibles for tourists)

over 80% of the people you meet in bars are Canadians, Americans, Russians, Europeans and other Latinos...

SCANDINAVIA

seriously man, fuck Cuba. Go there next.

Denmark in particular is my favorite place on the planet.

nowdays, all cuban sare allowed to go into the tourists areas but they do need the CUC ( convertible currency )

Best way is to meet girls in the street and just invite them. They will say YES 99% of the time. If you go with a cuban buddy or at least somebody that speaks spanish that would help a lot.

You need to know where to go. I never go to the touristy places. For example, in Varadero they have tourist areas in the beach and regular beach areas for the locals.

Been to Cuba a few times now. I most likely won't go back anytime soon but that is simply because I see Cuba as more of a cheap college party place to go. You can go for 7 days all inclusive to pretty nice resorts for usually lower than $700 CDN. That includes everything your flights, room, food all you can drink.

The food is really not that great but just stick to the basics and you will be fine. Last time we got sick from eating some of the seafood so just stick to breads, chicken, pasta, hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, that kinda stuff. If you are planning on getting wasted the entire time than you won't be caring much what you eat anyway.
