What is the point of that? He clearly made his intent known and that he wanted to kill police officers. It is not worth the risk trying to subdue him when he has clearly demonstrated a desire, willingness and potential ability to kill police officers.

He was a direct threat to their lives.

They should go after those rappers who talk about killing police as well. Fill them full of bullet holes.

LOL! 100's of videos of rappers getting plugged with 20+ bullets for threatening the police... omg

Maybe this guy had a thing against cops - lord knows odds are he's been fucked over by them in some form or fashion. So he rants and raves about wanting to kill them etc.,etc.,and they open fire when he jumps back from the dog they set loose on him.

This isnt the movies. People aren't like Rambo and Arnold who can take a bullet and keep going like nothing happened. They had enough time - and he was in a stable position that they could of shot him in the hand..the shoulder..the knee..the ankle etc.,rendering him disabled long enough to get him restrained.

Its like the guy who was on a bus with a hammer - ranting and raving and threatening to hurt/kill people and the police officers who were trying to get him to calm down.

They lost their patience I suppose and just shot him.

Then there's the guy who was wandering in the middle of the street - with a sword ...clearly either insane or high - and they shot him up too.

Is it not common sense - that a guy with a hammer or a sword - is not a direct threat to your life unless you come within arms reach of him? And if you have the resources of a police force - you can come up with something that doesnt require opening fire. Defend yourself sure - protect others sure...but kill someone who's obviously not in their right frame of mind in the first place?

I didn't see it in the article or the video - but was this guys only crime and death sentence/execution - just because he was angry at the cops? and was verbal about it?

If you tell 2 dozen cops, surroundnig you with dogs and an arsenal of weapons sufficient to take down a small army, that you're holding a gun with 13 bullets loaded and ready, you'd better be ready to die.

Sorry, it was a horrific video, and an absolute WORST CASE SCENARIO, but that guy was obviously on speed or something, and had a moment of insanity.

Absent the gun comment, he may have had a chance to get out alive.

South Central is not a little "suburb" of Los Angeles, it's the armpit of L.A., and a worldwide known area, full of gangs, drugs, and unfortunately a lot of innocent poor black families. So, when police in that part of town respond to a call, they are walking into an area full of landmines and unknowns.

This was an example of how miscommunication can end in fatality, and unfortunately, most cops (and criminals) lack communication skills, so there you have a formula for disaster.

It seems to me that police shootings are becoming more and more common, which is a very scary thing. Just recently, a young kid was shot here in Oregon.. He was unarmed, on some type of drugs, and was running for his MOM, no kidding.. I seem to recall at least 1/2 dozen similar stories, just here in my area in the past year..

It is classic rules of engagement - do not engage with the enemy unless shot at first, or when you are certain that your opposition has evidence of a gun. Not the official wording, but just how I understood it. I could be wrong, but verbal threats were never ever evidence of having a gun.

If you look at it, when the dog is unleashed, he stands up, throws out his "gun" (flip flop), and backs away. The shots come about a second or two afterwards. They were just waiting, and itching to kill the guy.

I highly doubt the cops were scared for their lives, or for the life of their dog. They just wanted some action. It seems to me that they were not even willing to negotiate. He had a simple request - to speak to the mother of his child. Sorry, but that doesn't sound too hard.

Now I do not agree with the guy who got shot to death, but I do think that the cops could've handled this in a much better way. It's unfortunate that ANYONE has to die - scumbag or not.

After he was shot, they investigated, concluded he had no weapon, but still do not assist him. That's sad. No human life should be treated like garbage, even if they've acted like it. Call me a pacifist, but that is how I feel.

And in the article, it says that 80 rounds were discharged by 3 guns. Thats a hell of a magazine, unless they all had automatic weapons...

I'd like to see all the people passing judgement on the cops (including the hippy that wrote that article) do what these cops do for a living, walk the beat in compton for a week and see the shit they have to deal with.

Don't think for a second that any of us (at least me) are taking police for granted - especially in the streets of Compton where god knows what the hell goes on there...

But when you have a man cornered, scared for his life - and you handle it in the fashion that you did, that's really something else...

What a cop out response (no pun intended). Look, they fucked up, just because they choose to work in a dangerous situation doesn't give them carte blanche to do what they did. Sorry, they obviously fucked up here.

I have much respect for what police officers are supposed to do, but they clearly didn't do that here.

after looking at the video... they could have saved the guy's life and the dog's life just by using a bean bag gun from the start.. wtf? they didnt even need to use the dog.

Regardless if he was a threat or not, it makes me sick to see they just left him there. He was a human being. A dumb one, asking for it, but still human. It was just a domestic disturbance call. He wasn't a murderer or anything. Any guy that grabs a flip-flop as self defence is harmless. He was a 24 yr old black guy living in Compton, surrounded by a bunch of white police officers with hair-trigger guns. The dude was scared. People react differently when they're scared. Not exactly the right place to say what he did to the officers, but it was probably all he knew. Maybe he thought they'd let him to talk to his baby's mama if he said he had a gun. Twisted thinking, but people have minds of their own, and Compton kids aren't educated properly, if at all.

The 80 rounds is probably legit. I remember reading a news story last year where an unarmed guy in Compton got 120 rounds in him.

I wish our society could live without guns. Unfortunately, that will never happen.

Yeah well there is an unfortunate consequence for exhbibiting your fear by threatening to shoot police officers.

maybe if you motherfuckers had better gun laws and weren't so "we are so free we can have any gun we want cause its in our gay outdated constitution" then shit like this would never have happened.

I have no official numbers but there is probably like 5 people killed by police a year here, because no one has guns.

you guys think you are a free country? government wise and politically maybe, but clearly you are prisoners to your public. bang bang.

oh and watch me cry about neg rep.

Look a 6:23, the object that flies from his hand doesn't look like a fuckin' flip flop. Then again at 9:46. That was definitely not a flip flop. It appears to be an L shaped object. Flip flops are not L shaped, even at 320x240 pixels. Guns are. Fucker got what he deserved.

Why the fuck didn't they just get someone to where the camera was?

Easy target, bean bag or taser.

So he was running his mouth all the time, so what? Is that an excuse to shoot someone? I'd be so dead then.
