Need some help at some of you Roku pro's. Wanted to upgrade from my WDTV to something that may be a bit faster. So bought the latest Roku 3 to give it a whirl. My main concern is with streaming "content"* from my PC. With the WDTV I had no problem using XBMC and its built in server to access all the best "content"* from my PC.

Maybe im crazy but it seems these things are bit more antiquated than the older equipment. It seems Roku does not support XBMC so you need to use this shitty knock off Plex. I may be stupid or something but this Plex seems like a piece of shit. Any of you guy's get this thing up and working with some of your more questionable "content"?

Do I go back to the old tried and true WDTV and ditch this heavily "regulated" piece of shit?

Are you "talking" about pr0n?

no for some reason I dont really enjoy watching p0rn on the big screen. Makes me feel kind of dirty and perhaps even a little guilty. I would assume their are channels available to cover that need.

It's more of an issue with video "content" that some big brands would prefer people not obtain with

and then at some point stream to their media players .

I use plex on my roku. It's not that shitty. You have to have the "plex server" installed on the comp with your vids. Works pretty flawlessly for me.

Plex isn't a knock off, it's a worthwhile competitor to xbmc. Plus you can sign up for the free service to have access to your plex server anywhere for streaming to your phone or laptop when on the road.

installed the server its just buggy as hell and crashing before even getting it to log in. Just wanted to make sure it would be possible, before I start banging my head against the wall to get it to work.

when I say knock off, I mean repackaged and "enhanced" from the open source foundation of xbmc. Is that not correct?

It sort of is:

Plex Media Center's source code was initially forked from XBMC Media Center on May 21, 2008; this fork is used today as a front end media player for Plex's back end server component.[3][4][2] Plex Media Server, unlike the open source frontend, is proprietary software.

I have run Plex off my TV and streamed from both Windows and OSX without issue. I have a friend who runs it off his Roku 2 and says it works good.

While we're on the topic, how do you like your Rokus? Pros/cons? How is it as an alternative to cable?

As I mentioned before I can't speak to the roku but I have been cable free w/ my WDTV for about 6 months..

Cons
1 If you're a sports freak you will have problem's(more like hassles)
2. You have to go to mutiple sources to get your content (netflix, hulu, torrents, ect)
3. You will loose your local news and other live programming.
4. Its not easy to find out when show's are on (tools are available to fix this)
5 It's hard to easily find out about new show's (unless you find out about them online
6. You want a big hard drive to access any content on your computer
7. It can be difficult to "legally" watch current shows (this is where torrents come in)
8. It can be difficult to setup your server and software (reason for this thread;)
9. Other's in the house may not watch the same things you do (the live stuff)
10. Other's in the house may not know where to go to find content
11. If you do anything shady you run the risk of getting sued( get a VPN)

Pro's
1. Get rid of cable bill
2. Once setup and know where to go, much better experience.
3. Can watch whole series and season's concurrently
4. No limit to what you can watch or when you can watch it (if you know where to find the content)
5. You are upsetting the mega brand's archaic business model.

Im sure there are lots more. Just a few off the top of my head. It takes a little getting used to. But once you get used to it, you will be very happy you took the plunge.

I have a Roku 2 and Plex and have no problems running them. I don't know if it makes a different but I have a separate computer where the plex server software runs on.

We have 3 rokus, all pull from the same plex server, sometimes at the same time. No issues. I even stream from my plex to my phone when out and about sometimes.

We have cable again, but only because it was less expensive to get cable + net than just net because the data cap was way higher with a bundle and I use a ton of data, but the reality is we almost never watch cable, except for natgeo.

appletv all day - replaced my roku with it

Are you running the apple 2? Or a newer version? Are you streaming torrents?
Cable, and move on to revenue producing activities.

/faggotry.

Cable is to restrictive. Making you wait around for weeks and months hoping to catch a rerun. I take it you have never experienced the joy's of watching episode after episode of Breaking Bad interruption free for days and days.

You don't make money when you're watching tv, or sleeping?

Just fucking witcha, cheesehead :anon.sml:

Yah, I do truly love serial episodes without commercials, but I have so little time I just catch them a few at a time on free-tv-online etc.

I don't even have a TV hooked up anymore- my 55" is my blueprint monitor and my 42's are both wings ;-)
