Kind of Blue is great.

When I was in highschool this kid that played alto sax in the jazz band was playing Cannonball Adderley solos off of KoB in the band room and I heard him from down the hall in the photo lab, so I walked down and was like, "yo, that's that cannonball adderley ish" and he looked like I ruined his day 'cause he never improvised his solos, he always planned them out ahead and we called him out on it all the time. I guess he was hoping to pass it off as his own and didn't expect that the rest of us knew that stuff.

He was a good musician, but in highschool we all really believed in improvising, so he lost cred by planning his stuff out. (I played guitar in the jazz band, my only school band experience and they kicked me out for getting high).

Sun Ra is awesome, some of it's pretty out there.
 
i used to go to the hardcore underground jazz clubs in nyc, and while the scene was interesting, i didn't dig the music all that much... i guess i like my structure. in college, every time i fucked up in a classical guitar recital, my instructor would say "nice jazz".

i like smooth jazz, wayman tisdale/peter white type stuff, but not the true jazz you guys are talking about.
