Do you use off site back up?

After recently spending a lot of time backing up my computer before I pushed that button to start f-disc for the first time, I want to look into off site back up. (It was suggested here on WF).

I would like to know more like
  • costs to back up
  • costs to recover
  • can I use my computer while it back ups off site (I have a lot of pictures)
  • how secure is it
I will still have backup at home, but I want all bases covered.
 


My web server is being backed up to a second hard drive and from there to SAN storage. At home I backup my stuff to a server in the basement. From there it goes to a second hard drive and from there I mirror everything to an external hard drive with Robocopy (updates only the files that get changed). Every once in a while I burn stuff onto a DVD and put it into my bank deposit box.

In my (still) full time job I work as a system administrator and backups are a life saver for any business. You cannot have enough backups!!!!

-I mirror my hard drive (SATA internal drives).

-I then backup to an external WD HD so that when I go on vacation I can take it with me incase my place burns or is stolen. (This is incremental, and I also don't remove "deleted" files from my primary drive from this backup so I can go back and get old files if I accidently delete something totaly.)
-I now backup my external to another external just because it didn't cost me anything and now I can be etra sure.
-I backup small files to my webserver from home.
-I got carbonite before I started any of the above and it works good if you want a set-and-forget and have someone else have your files. (YOu can not access them remotely so thats a big downfall.) Iwont be renewing after my subscription is over.

For all my backups (other than carbonite) I use SmartSync Pro and HIGHLY suggest it!! It does EVERYTHING, tons of options and not very much $.
 
what would you guys consider the best external HD out there? whenever I read reviews online they are always filled w/ neg comments...
 
For questions 1 and 2 - I pay a monthly $19.95 for 10GB of storage space (Subscription Plans offered by IBackup. Bandwidth is not measured. I'm using 66% of that space right now. This does not include my photos or mp3s - those are only saved locally.

3 - yes, but the Internet will seem slow. It completely kills VOIP, so schedule it at a time that you won't be doing heavy surfing or phone calls. My backups take about 20-30 minutes / night (mostly my Outlook file, I imagine... will be better when I switch to gmail next year). I get an email every night when it's done, telling me if there were any errors (mostly with files that are locked)

4 - This is my main concern. While I only store some files on my computer in an encrypted format, I'm a bit concerned about the other side. ibackup states:

IDrive and IDrive Multimedia, the Network mapping applications have 128-bit SSL encryption enabled by default. IBackup for Windows has 128-bit SSL encryption enabled by default. IDrive for Mac has 128-bit SSL encryption during transmission.

IBackup Professional enforces 256-bit AES encryption on storage in addition to 128-bit SSL encryption during transmission.

So how does that work?

Thank you everyone, lots of great info. I'm going to keep looking into it, I don't have the $$ currently for off site, so will just back it up here for now. I like the ideas of a back up being off site. I want to back it up here and off site eventually (it would take 3 disasters in 2 locations for me to loose everything).
