Does money make life worth living?

The reason why so many people lose enthusiasm for life is because on balance, life's a drag. Let's face it, everyday life for most people is pretty banal and unfulfilling. You get up and get into a traffic jam everyday to get to a job you dislike if not hate, to work with people you'd rather not associate with, to earn a paycheck that's spent before you even get it. And you have to keep that up for years on end. Add in all the other pressures and stresses of life, and it's easy to see why many people decide it's simply not worth it. It's either the stress of the rat race grind, or the stress of not having a job and economic hardship. Either way, it's unrelenting stress. And if one is alone and has no one to share the journey with, it makes life that much more taxing. "All the lonely people, where do they all come from? All the lonely people, where do they all belong?" Money may not guarantee happiness, but it frees one from all the soul crushing aspects of life. Life with money is a paradise, life without money is a prison.

Money may not guarantee happiness,

Nor can poverty.

Those who say money won't cannot bring you happiness that's false.
Money can bring you a miserable life, and it can bring you the best live you can ever experience.
Money is the "GATEWAY" to happiness :) Frees you.

Some people like money, others like vacations, some may prefer family...everybody has their own reason to persevere and goals to accomplish.

I went to a mission trip in Mexico, and saw alot of poor Hispanics MUCH happier then many Americans. Being content comes from within.

This debate pretty much covers this entire topic:
http://www.debate.org/debates/money-is-destroying-humans/1/

TL;DR - In short, some kid with Asbergers completely shits on the argument against a money-based society. With or without money, we would still need Human Capital to trade/barter & survive...

Freal though, OP, I've been having those thoughts on a daily basis for the past year. That's why building passive income is such an attractive concept. Even if you do have to work hard for self-employment or a passive income, at least you don't have to commute or put up with shitty co-workers.

Anyway, I also question the existence of money, and if there are any economic alternatives that don't require money serving as the middle man between humans & goods/services (no luck yet).
.
The most immediate problem with our system is that the average person spends too much time trying to acquire an imaginary digit instead of the REAL essentials... I've been doing a lot of thinking about time, and what a priceless asset it is. You can never make it back. Our time on this planet is unavoidably finite.

And yet we sell it for pennies...

Opportunity makes life better and more enjoyable.

Money is by far the easiest mechanism for realising opportunity.

I'd love to be able to speak every single dialect of every single language fluently like a native speaker - that would create amazing and countless opportunities, but that would be far more difficult than making money - which can be done in countless (and often amazing) ways.

OMG! Thank you for this thread.

You cover this essential topic in such a coherent and eloquent manner. You have made the world a better place and now deserve the +rep that will turn your red bricks into orange.

BTW, are you in any way related to pewep?

Money doesn't make me happy, nor does the opportunity that it provides. Materialistic opportunities and experiences are not fulfilling, for me. Everyone's different.

You bastard! I too had that gif lined up waiting for the right moment to post it! :sulk:

edit: Oh and jhoffy22 - opportunities are not constrained to material goods. There may be an opportunity to save lives, educate the next generation for the better of the whole planet, free the innocent, end unnecessary poverty, anything really!
