Years ago I was in the web hosting game. At that time Burstnet/Nocster was experiencing some major problems, outages and the like.

I'm looking for a dedicated server for myself to host my many different sites on and I was wondering if anyone is with Nocster now and what their thoughts on them are or if someone can recommend another decent server company?

I want cPanel and I don't want to pay external server licensing prices, Nocster has them for $20/month, external licenses are $35+/month.

Or a good VPS solution.

bah should have put this in Hosting & Domains, my bad.

I don't have any recent experience with Nocster, went off them around the time you are talking about.

Liquidweb has been good for me, you can find some VPS specials on WHT and their cloud servers seem good so far (www.stormondemand.com), but I only recently setup a cPanel/WHM server through that so don't have much history with it, I think it was an extra $20 per month for cPanel.

Years ago I ran one of the largest resellers of Nocster's servers. When I sold that company, I was just left with my LayeredTech server - They were great until the yearly price increases started, and network and tech issues seemed to increase and somehow only affect my server/switch...

That being said, I'm now back at Nocster, having both a server and VPS there. I've had some minor overnight packetloss issues apparently stemming from a server on my switch getting DDOSed, but I switched my sites over to my Nocster VPS, and that was fine with no packetloss. The new network guy there has really turned things around for the better. Their tech support is still pretty damn good, and you can't beat the support they provide for the price.

I was out at the BurstNet/Nocster datacenter years ago and met a number of the support staff, customer service/billing, the owner, and everyone in between - I'm confident I made a good choice by moving my main server back over there.

I remember years ago that BurstNet was the cheapest for a reason.

If you're looking for dedicated, Psychz.net has decent options, albeit pricey.

For VPS, look at PhotonVPS. They're the same people as Psychz, so the quality is still amazing. I think they do at most 8 VPSes per node, so it isn't oversold, but the prices are very reasonable.

I'll def dig around for more info on what you guys are suggesting. I like the prices, still, at Nocster and was hoping all the troubles they had years ago had gone away.

Didn't Burstnet/Nocster use to be ran in some guys basement?

Not to my knowledge... If my memory is correct, Burst started their hosting business by having colocation space at the now defunct VDI datacenter. While they were building out their Scranton datacenter, I think they had some servers located in their PA office, as well, but no basement was involved from what I know.

The facility that BurstNet owns in Scranton, PA was originally only part of the building - The building was owned by a relative of the owner, and half (or more) of the building was originally a Kosher butcher shop. The butcher shop eventually shut down, and BurstNet bought the whole building, and expanded into that space, complete with a full raised flooring system (where their old section didn't have that at the time).

Good at least they're a legit operation. But I do remember hearing about a basement ran datacenter... I'll see if I can dig up the name.
