Does Steely Dan Suck?

I was just sitting in my office grinding away, when my GF comes in to sit and chat with me a bit as she sometimes does late at night before she goes to bed. I was listening to some Steely Dan at the time, and I took this opportunity to play her a few tunes (Black Cow, Deacon Blues), and point out the interesting chord changes and subtle lyrical cynicism of Becker and Fagen. After a little while working through Aja, I moved on to Fagan's "the Nightfly", and continued my little music appreciation session until she finally got angry and asked if I was trying to get her to leave me alone.

Now, we've been living together for two years, and she's told me many times that she does not like Steely Dan, and that she doesn't appreciate them either, but I did not believe her. I fail to see how someone can not appreciate quartal harmony and postmodern literary snark when it's all rolled up inside a slick little disco biscuit, but maybe I'm wrong.

So I ask you, faggots, to tell me the answer.

All the records are so different, it's really like listening to an entirely different band every time. For me, I prefer the later stuff like Aja and Gaucho, but I can still get into the earlier material. "Fire In The Hole" is one of my favorite piano riffs.

Here's why I think Steely Dan sucks: A few years ago I paid $180 (face value, I think, whatever it was a ton) to see them play Beacon Theatre in NYC.

That pompous motherfucker Fagen played 45 minutes of improvisational bullshit that not even his hard core fans recognized before he deigned to play a song anyone recognized. Then he spent another 30 minutes playing some more strange crap. Even the weird Steely Dan lifer fans were pissed.

If my seats weren't so shitty, I would have hopped up on stage and strangled him for wasting my time and money like that.

Don't go charging that bullshit, superstar ticket prices and then play the muse - save the experimental bullshit for your own time. No one gives a shit if you can play the lute or the harpischord. Play Hey Nineteen, Peg, Deacon Blues - the shit that allows you to charge outrageous prices.

Someday I'll see him in a restaurant and punch his lights out.
