I thought to post it in the Hosting section, but I think more people need to be aware of this.

So my client had one domain at Moniker, till this January, but yet in December I forced him to transfer to Namecheap.

Now this domain is at Namecheap, and whois services show that.

But now he's received email from Moniker, that their charge on his credit card failed (of course, because he never gave it to them) and he needs to pay in order to renew the domain.

I mean, WTF? I thought one can't be dumber in domaining than 1&1. And Moniker don't know they already don't handle this domain? Or just try to fish? Or scam? And they once was a reputable company...

What a morons. :action-smiley-052:

.

So an automated e-mail was sent when another automated system failed to do its job - which even if the charge went through would of been refunded - and now Moniker is evil?

I'm all about calling out companies for fraudulent actions, but this is totally innocuous.

they are pretty bad though.
i used to be a fan. but they sold domains i bought with snapname and i paid for renewals that werent renewed they then asked me to pay i think it was an extra 100 dollars.
i couldnt transfer some tlds neither and i have risked to just cancel and re register them at namecheap.
used to be a fan but what has happened there is astonishing and cant understand it at all.
i dont think they try to cheat u, but really really have chaos in their house after those transitions and the guys working there now just dont give a shit

You see, in this world I really don't like anyone charge my credit card for nothing, even if they refund it later. Because it costs me some nerves cells and other worries. And it costs my believe in humanity decay. Why do I need it? I call it dirty business, bro.

Yes, I believe they didn't make it with evil will. Okay, it's better for their karma. Okay, call it not dirty business but only messy business. But that's it.

It's extremely nerve-wracking when you are charged $9 by mistake and have to wait a business day for a refund to post. It can really cut into a man's ramen noodle budget.

I'd wonder if the email even came from Moniker - if your client never gave them a CC how could they have attempted to charge it? I'd take a look at it yourself, it could easily be some random phishing email that didn't get caught by his spam filter. I must receive a dozen a day on one of my older email addresses, phishing for ebay/paypal/namecheap/etc logins.

I'm not so sure about a business day, man.

Sure enough this were them.

Fair enough - and upon 2 minutes of Googling it seems this specific problem is actually a pretty common occurrence with Moniker ever since they launched a redesign last June.

And yet they apparently haven't looked into fixing the issue despite having 7 months to do so.

I wouldn't call it a scam or fraud - it's complete and total apathy, which is much worse.

That's all I need to know to not do business with them - not that I'd ever leave Namecheap, they have yet to let me down in even a small way.

If this is the worst thing to happen to you in the domain world I'd change back to Moniker quick and be glad you haven't had a namecheap problem yet. Namecheap is in full team america police the world mode right now.

The new Moniker is an epic clusterfuck. The worst thing is that all old invoices were gone the day they launched the new system, thanks to Moniker I'm paying a few hundred dollars more in taxes. No annoucement, no warning.

Moved all domains over to other registrars a few weeks after the launch of the "New Moniker", the lost invoices weren't the only problem by far. Once they were one of the best registrars around, but whoever still trusts them must be really naive. The only thing they are good at now is empty promises.

Of course not. I wouldn't bother anyone with complaints on some unknown fuckers. But Moniker once was reputable registrar and I know many people who are not so often on IM forums still do trust them, so I kinda wanted to warn.

Interesting - what was the problem with Namecheap?

I am currently in the process of getting some of our domains out of Moniker (they really are absolutely dysfunctional right now) and was actually planning to move them to Namecheap...

Any suggestions for a competent registrar?
